    Bleeding radiator/cooling systems

It's highly likely that you have an air-lock - probably in the heater. That would mean that there is a 2 to 3 litre shortfall in the coolant circulating. Start up from cold and open the bleed screw which is on the return pipe from the heater. As said beware the little rascal jumping out of...

    button baffler

I'm 99% sure it's the now obsolete Traffic master system. A previous owner probably installed it a long time ago. It was a subscription service. The system was abandoned in 2012 (I think) due to Sat-Navs and smart phones doing a better job.

    Wooshing sound when acclerating

OK then. The 2002 TD4 has usually 2 main turbo hoses as opposed to 3 on the later engines. Check them both for splits that look as though they were made with a Stanley knife. With a small split or hole you will get the wooshing noise, but no great power loss - as the split gets bigger you...

    diesle at Esso

I haven't tried this new Esso yet - isn't it called Esso Supreme. Seems to be getting a lot of favourable comments. Apparently it's got the highest Cetane level of all European fuel. What is the extra ingredient? More Ethanol? Or is it extra Nitrogen like the new Shell V-Power Nitro? I...

    Wooshing sound when acclerating

Hi ferp, and welcome to Landyzone. A bit short on the info there! What year? What engine? What is the leak - petrol, diesel, oil? I am already thinking a split turbo hose - but without full info - I am unable to comment really.

    Best cheap mods!!??

    1. Pull the braid vacuum pipe off the EGR and stick a golf tee in the end of it. Result de-activated EGR. 2. Use a length of closed-cell foam to insulate the cool feed pipe from the A/C compressor to the bulkhead. Improves the efficiency of the A/C by reducing the heat the pipe picks up by...

    oh f** & b*****x

If you find water in the ECU box I'd try 'blotting' it up with kitchen paper towel roll and then use a hair dryer. Then the WD40. The sensor is on one of the injectors - possibly on Nr.1. Use a hair dryer on that too. Pesumably fault code 142.

What is the actual fault code that the diagnostic gizmo found?

    leave standing for 3 months

I agree - starting it and letting it idle a bit is the worst thing that you could do.

    leave standing for 3 months

Fill the diesel tank to near the brim - so leaving no oxygen in the tank which encourages the slime-growth which can occur if left standing. Can't remember the scientific name - but it looks (and feels) like snot - it chokes filters and pumps - horrible stuff to have to clean out of the tank...

    air filter

Yup - leave the sleeve on - it keeps the bits of flies and wasps from choking the corrugations of the finer filter underneath. The bottom of my filter housing is always full of dead flies and such. Difficult to get them all out without using a vacuum cleaner.

    Tyre sizes and wheel locks

Hi, 225/55 17 is the original size. 235/55 17 is the size I use. There is no problem with either size - but you can't run a mix. You will over heat the rear diff, put extra strain on the VCU and the IRD. I drove only 5 miles home after I had the big tyres fitted to the rear, and...

    viscousity

Could you do a comparison between the cheapy Tesco diesel and the latest Shell V-Power with extra Nitrogen? I still haven't worked out how they add the nitrogen and what good, if any, it does. As for the padded-cell idea ... ..... after I have lined up the centre caps on my alloy wheels...

    And the black smoke?

Yes - the little temperature sensor is on the short turbo hose which was only fitted on later models as hd3 says. When that sensor goes wrong you can get all sorts of faults - I had at various times: Smoke Limp mode/lack of pulling power EML Intermittant and very annoying - cleaning and or...

    boot storage units

I got my 'modular' storage system at Lidl - on special offer. Stackable, interchangeable, recycleable, highly adaptable, comes in 2 basic sizes that interlock. There are lids availiable which I only fit to the top layer. An excellent system - and spares are availiable everywhere. I'm...

2003 TD4 BMW engine wont start

Despite the guide slots, it is possible to refit the fuel-rail sensor back to front - this brings on the EML. I know - I did this - d'oh! Perhaps one of the others could be wrong fitted too.

    fuel filter seperator

This is interesting - as I've never heard of this separator option. The filter I replaced was from LR dealer and it just had an 'in' and an 'out' connection. Any pics? - do they look similar?
