i think im going to get a gold star for asking the daftest question

got a new filter this morning and its got a sleeve over it

now i would assume this is to stop crap going into the elements so when u service it u can pull this sleeve off, clean it and put it back on,

the one in the car hasnt got a sleeve on it

i thought i read somewhere about putting a spray of oil on it

please can u tell me if the sleeve stays on please

would rather get slaughtered with mick taking than get it wrong

thks guys

will go and hide in a corner reading for the public stoning, lolol

Yeah, sleeve stays on......not sure about spraying it with oil, thought that was just cotton filters. :)

new filters i've bought from loclal LR dealers .. have included that sleeve

it seems to me that it's over the finer element to ..
1 .. stop larger debris .. twigs etc from puncturing the underlying filter
2 .. to absorb the majority of oil / water that might get in there .. before it reaches the other filter

when i changed the first one .. i took the sleeve off to see if it were washable
it had a few spots of what appeared to be .. engine oil on it ..
i soaked it in a bucket warm water mixed with the degreaser "gunk" .. swirled it with a stick ..
rinsed it .. left it to dry .. .. and to me it Seems to be re-usable ..
( i only tried blowing through it .. comparing it to the new filter .. to test that possibility .. )

i would Not spray Any oil on it At All .. even if said oil is the type supplied with aftermarket filters like 'K&N'
as that oil .. even if it did the same job on the sleeve like it does to K&N filters ..
will probably partly end up on the underlying filter element .. and reduce it's air flow capability ..

Yup - leave the sleeve on - it keeps the bits of flies and wasps from choking the corrugations of the finer filter underneath.

The bottom of my filter housing is always full of dead flies and such.

Difficult to get them all out without using a vacuum cleaner.

Hmmmmmmmmm I think I threw mine

if yer worried about it ..
the material be similar to the speaker-cab wadding material that maplin sell
.. or used to sell .. ( no idea if they still do )
the idea behind that 'wadding' is to provide a larger 'apparent' space ( volume ) for higher sound frequencies .. i.e. it allows plenty of air to pass through it ..

be like a 'synthetic wool' of sorts .. probably used for all sorts of things ..

thks guys

will know in the future as well, will be interesting to see what the old one is like, gulp

plus i emailed the manufacture but thought i would never get a reply, but i did a little while ago and said the same as you guys

appreciate the help

Just chuck the old one away and put new one in just as it comes out of the box. For the few quid it costs, it's not worth the trouble of trying to clean it and risking bad aspiration for your engine. :fish:

hiya

thks, am going to put the filter in once its a nice sunny day, dont fancy working in the rain

appreciate ur help and will know for next time, dread to think what the old filter is like but will let u know

even though i only covered a 1,000 miles last year will still change the engine oil and filter as the same as i did the previous year as for the sake of 50 quid, well worth looking after the engine the best i can

Sorry to bump this up but I am ready for the 12,000 service (120k) to be done. Had the 96k schedule done at 108k by a specialist, so I am happy that all the fluids, filters and belts were sorted then.

I am a bit of a novice with the spanners, but wanted to have a go myself and working through the Haynes book have completed most of the visual checks and top ups already and the oil change is done. However, in the manual, it advises that the air filter only needs changing every 24,000 and I cannot find info on the crankcase breather timing/mileage at all! Both were definitely changed at the last service.

Any help or thoughts on these last two would be much appreciated please.

Yes, I guess that's is logical and I thought it would be the answer. But if I am gonna have to take the covers off to inspect the air filter, I might as well change it.
Cheers

to be honest its more about doing stuff that needs doing like dirty filter and keeping oil clean ie by changing than book service times which are more to do with sales than longevity of your vehicle
