Hi Guys

Over the last few days I have noticed a strange whooshing noise when
accelerating , it only kicks in once the revs get over 2.5K and then back off when i take my foot off the accelerator, I think it may be the Turbo , but there has been no loss of power at all and still drives ok ,at first i thought it was something to do with the aircon as that's what it sounded like but im sure its related to the turbo. I have also noticed a slight leak under the car as well (directly under the engine).
Any ideas

Hi ferp, and welcome to Landyzone.

A bit short on the info there!

What year?
What engine?
What is the leak - petrol, diesel, oil?

I am already thinking a split turbo hose - but without full info - I am unable to comment really.

Hi Sorry for the Lack of Info
It's a 52 plate 3 door Freelander TD4 diesel
Im not sure on the leak I think its coolant fluid
But as said , there is no loss in power

OK then.

The 2002 TD4 has usually 2 main turbo hoses as opposed to 3 on the later engines.

Check them both for splits that look as though they were made with a Stanley knife.

With a small split or hole you will get the wooshing noise, but no great power loss - as the split gets bigger you will eventually suffer extreme power loss and black smoke from the exhaust.

They may well only be obvious when the pipes are under a bit of pressure. Get someone to hold the revs around 2500 and feel all around the hoses for leaks. Especially the underside of the 90degree bend one on the right-hand side. The left-hand side one may well have a hole at the rear where a screw-head might rub against it.

The 'leak' may well be condensate from the air-con. Certainly nothing to do with turbo-hoses.

If you stand at the passenger side and look down over the top of the fuse-box, to the bulkhead just above the steering rack -you might see water dripping from the A/C drain pipe - a little vertical black rubber pipe with a flattened end.

Be sure to come back and let us know how you get on.

Good luck.

on my old one I had this whooshing sound and discovered it was the air intake pipe on the bottom of the turbo , at least I am sure it was my old Freelander but look any way

Hi just been reading this thread as I was looking for some info about mine. Just come back off holiday towing a caravan with 2005 freelander when on the last part of journey I got the wooshing noise accompanied with loss of power, black smoke from exhaust and the engine malfunction light coming on. Could this be the same problem or should I look elsewhere? The light didn't stay on all the time.

Also check the small braided hose that goes on to the egr valve. people pull these off to make them have a little more bottom end power. Mine is off on mine and it makes the sound like you are discribing. between 2000 to 3500 revs you can really hear it.

look up egr valve for more details.

Defo sounds like a intercooler pipe has split or popped off check that they haven't rubbed on anything as are prone for it !!! Easy test have someone give it a few hard revs whilst looking and listening under the bonnet just be careful as there are many hot and moving parts!!!!!!!!.if one or both need changing silicon hoses are worth a thought bit more expensive but far better and just make sure they don't rub when refitted

Think I've found the problem top right angle hose split. Hope this cures it. Thanks for all the advice.

As for mutsnutz comment, how the hell can kids afford petrol at these prices?:D
