A new generation Izuzu crew cab pickup [bit of a monster] towing a 3 axle trailer with prefab shed load.
Stuck in a bit sticky gate way. Driver had it in low box but that is about all he knew how to do. It just did not want to go, do the they have traction control you have to switch off? I don't know.
Any way hooked the lot up to my Ninety, told him to drive gentle and towed the lot to the site of a neighbour's new Alpaca shelter.
Good them old land rovers with diff locks he said. Did not mention mine is just standard.

Done a bit of snagging on my transfer box rebuild. I put it all back together and back in a couple of weekends ago and got an MOT on it, but I did a long run yesterday and it is still leaking oil. It's not coming out of the drive flange seals or from around the centre shaft, and the only things I can see with oil drips on are the bolts holding the sump pan on. So I took it off and put a fresh gasket on it with an extra helping of sealant on both sides and did it up again. I'll see if that's any better. I put sealant on the threads of the bolts too, for good measure. Off for a trip to Wales this weekend with a bit of luck, so I'll see how many times I need to refill the transfer case.

In saffa land the oil around the sump bolts is from the intermediate cross shaft leaking into the cavity between the trf and g/box and then the wind doing the spreading.
No amount of sealant or gaskets between the trf box and g/box seems to contain the oil
Bloody annoying leak - but at least the oil is not black engine oil ending up on the driveway

@D1Nut Do you use a thicker oil in warmer climates for the gear/transfer box?
Just asking

No - I use the std API gl4 spec. This trf box has got 600k on it - a bit whinny on very light throttle and a fair amount of sloppyness between it and the diff's - although I change oil at max 20k and after any water excursions or a long towing session. Then the box seems to leak about 200 ml after 400 kilo's of highway speed and then only another 100 ml in the next 1000 kilo's so it get's topped up often. Slow offroad stuff it won't even use 100 ml in 2000 kilo's

In saffa land a fix that is used for that leak past the o-ring is an inverted welsh plug machined into the casing. Never seen one but the fix sounds correct

We are between gales, it's cold wet and windy out there plus I'm heading for 70, so no inclination to get out and under...
So it I took my 110 into the nearest landrover enthusiasts garage for a full service on Wednesday for work on Thursday...
As I drove into their driveway , the landy lost all forward motion and needed towing in the last 20 ft.
They've just phoned to say service done, and the clutch plate had broken...

If you are going to break down that's the place to do it...

I find there’s never a right place but there’s always a really inconvenient time or place!

R380 #3
New flywheel (JLR)
New Valeo clutch

The exhaust had sheared at the elbow below the turbo where it joins the manifold. It was welded back together by my indy specialist. No more rattling exhaust.

Here's #2, #1 was similar.
It was at this point that I realised it was likely to be the new LOF clutch.
But just to be sure, i'm going fit a new box.
Winchester gears are being more than supportive.

Yikes, that's bad. I would have been at the hammer throwing stage having gone to all that work to find that.
With regards to LOF clutch the specialists who quoted my son for a clutch on his 200tdi didn't list LOF as an option which I though was interesting.

a quick update - I seem to have cured the transfer box oil leak. I did around 300 miles over the weekend; over to Wales, plus a few errands whilst there, and back to the East Midlands and the oil level hasn't gone down.

No drips on the underside. That should be OK for a few more years now I hope.

Yes, I got an extended sump when I was running the overdrive unit, as that tends to warm the oil up a good deal. Indeed, I'd made myself an oil cooler with a separate radiator and a thermostatically switched pump, which kept the temperatures down to something sensible for long motorway runs in the summer. Then the overdrive unit went wrong, and was boiling my oil despite the best efforts of my cooling system, so I no longer run it. Instead, when my R380 box got very noisy, I ordered a replacement with the high fifth gear option. This I prefer, because it's not quite so high geared and performance is more flexible in the 60-80 mph range so it's a good deal easier merging and changing lanes. It's much easier to match your speed to the traffic in the lane you're trying to get into. It keeps the revs down to around the 3,000 mark, and a long blast on the motorway will see temperatures in the 100 - 110 C range. I've not got the separate oil cooler on any more.

Haven’t “done” it yet as need to find a 21mm socket but somehow the arm on my wheel carrier has snapped.
