They are ok if you only do small light duty stuff. I am not a fan to be honest but if it suits your application then at £300 probably worth it. At £500 it is a bit steep. It looks to have a lot of accessories which are worth having. The condition of the bed etc would be worth checking along with backlash etc in the cross slides.
As I thought then!
No point if I can't do stuff like skim brake discs and flywheels and grind the warp out of a cylinder head!!:D:D:D
(Joking but you know what i mean) I'd quite like to be able to make some stuff out of billet ally.
i'd imagine it'd be OK for those wishing to make a model steam engine or summat.
and as for the backlash and the bed condition, I'd need a time-served bloke like yourself alongside me when i went to view it!;):)

There ya go Stan and Dan

In the days when she would really have needed an overlocker she could not afford one, since then, and since she met me, she has worked abroad so much that although she could have got one she would not have been around enough to use it! Just coming home at weekends, she took smaller projects with her.
I'd like an industrial machine cos I make soft tops and tonneau covers for kit cars, but at the moment I haven't got the room. She has at least 4 sewing machines, including a treadle Singer and I have one, another old Singer as it needs to be that sort to sew vinyl etc for the jobs I do.
She's just told me that although I bought her the Janome she has, which she loved at the time, she has just told me she wants another one as the old one "doesn't do the sort of embroidery she wants to do"! so maybe that is Christmas sorted out.;)
I'd like a lathe and there is one in an auction this Saturday, near here,

with loads of bits as you can see. But it's probably a bit puny for the sort of stuff I'd want to do.
Others will comment.
but yet again, no space at the moment.
Guide price £300 to £500. no idea if that is likely to be right, but we do get lots of bargains from here!
Personally I wouldn't go for that one. It's one of those cheap and cheerful jack of all trades master of none jobbies from Machine Mart or similar. They'll spin a piece of metal, sure enough, but they're not very substantially made. Look how lightweight the headstock casting is where the milling attachment goes on, and also the tailstock casting. That's going to flex under heavy loads. A little lightweight scraping of non-ferrous would probably be OK, but once you try to work steel or iron you'll probably get a lot of vibration which is not only annoying but means it's difficult to be terribly accurate or get a fine finish. That's one of the reasons why professional grade machines have such massive castings. Plus the trouble with these tiny ones is that they readily develop slack in the miniscule headstock bearings which can be difficult to get rid of, again yielding a poor finish and reduced accuracy.

Next time I get a lathe I'm going to go for something about the size and weight of a Colchester Student, which will accommodate the kind of workpieces I'm interested in, is sufficiently heavily built and designed for a long professional life. It's adjustable, repairable and you can get parts.

You'd only have to do the feckin shower, half the rest is done bar the groutin and the rest is p!ss easy.
What do you charge in bots of wine?
Did I leave booze? Do bears poop in the forest?:D:D:D

Right then heres one for you.....
A chap I know, not a mate but ive known him for years.
He asked me for some work & I said ive got a few wee jobs I can put you on to in the
coming weeks. Fair enough id give him a shout, then the next day he comes and asks
for a loan of cash (400 sovs) he said hed give me a monkey back so I thought ok then.
He's been up to see me today says he'll have the money tomorrow.
Now do I take the 500 cause I kinda feel bad cause he's skint or do I just take the cash &
say cheers. It must have been quite hard to come & ask me in the first place.
What would yous do.....
Takey or no Takey :):)

I would probably just have the £400 back and see if he tries again to use you as a bank.

Ask him if he'll do a day's graft for you if you take the 400.

I've lost considerably more to impecunious friends over the years than I ever have to burglars. Maybe they'll give it you back the first few times so as to establish a relationship, then they'll scarper with it. If there's any chance of getting any of the money back, you might as well take it. To most people out there, money is much more important than friendship, and they'd much rather lose a friend than cough up.
