I have just looked out to see the wee one under his hedge surrounded by a bunch of seven threatening magpies moving in on him. I called him in and they hopped it. I caught them scaring him off his dinner last week and then eating it. If I hadn't seen it I would have believed he had eaten his dinner. This cannot go on - the magpies will have to be exterminated. The trouble is, they have got a nest in one of my pine trees and do seem to hang around because of that even though they are all adults now, the family ties seem to be very strong. The tree is big and the nest is high up so that will need a visit by the Tree surgeons - £££'s - if I am to really solve the problem.:(:(:(

You are really humane. Not sure I would be like this. Mind you we feed our dogs indoors.

Interesting, so it seems that it is illegal to kill magpies in the uk. I will have to have a 'chat' with our locals as I am sure there will be someone who is 'qualitied' to do this job. :rolleyes:

Never ring them back, you could be connecting to a premium rate call. When you get through they can play a recorded ring tone so you think you are still waiting for the call to be answered. Numbers can be well disguised, I have had a few with uk numbers which when answered are clearly not uk callers. I check out suspicious calls without answering or calling back on a website, who-called.co.uk

I 'appens to like magenpies, after all they is just big spuggies and need to follow their instincts and feed same as any other bird. Can't you eliminate the problem by feeding the doggies where the magenpies can't muscle in?
 
Mid week I had 80 granite paving slabs delivered, big heavy bugres. Yesterday I hand carried them all (one at a time) from the front to back of Wimblowdriver Towers, via the garage. Damned hard graft :oops:. Today was lighter duties, finishing fitting a new wall leccy socket then filling in a form to get SWMBO car V5c 'cos the dealer cocked it up online and it never happened :mad:. And as its poets day I am having the rest of the day off. Oh, hang on a mo, I is re-tyred so every day is poets day :D
 
On the magpie/crow nuisance issue I would add that our cat gets fed indoors and all of its left-over food is put out on the same garden paver every time.
It is a toss-up as to who gets there first... The 3 resident crows, the many local magpies, or the couple of local garden foxes.
The cat has rejected the grub and there is no reason not to let another creature have it.

Yes, the food is now placed where I can watch it from inside! Sadly, this morning's activities did not involve any food! The poor wee dog was just enjoying his kip under the hedge in the peace and quiet of the early morning. Each time I have had 'trouble' it is either first light as they go out for the day's foraging or late afternoon as the light is fading when they journey back from a good day's feeding. I am more and more of the feeling that it is the nesting tree that will have to go as that seems to be their base. :(
One hope I have is that the early part of the new year is lambing time round here so the farmers have some justification for exterminating 'vermin' that is harmful to livestock. :)
I too, like the birds, they are always so perfectly groomed, but I cannot have this happening to my animals.:(
 
Wimblowdriver Towers sits on the edge of agricultural land so there is a huge population of crows, jackdaws and wood pigeons. I miss the magenpies and jays which are in the woodlands where I used to live, they are rarely sighted here. There is also a small population of marsh harriers, which have expanded their range from the south / east of Englalaland in recent decades. I keeps me bins handy as sometimes we get very rare visitors, once saw a flock of waxwings on next doors bushes nicking the berries. :)

They are welcome to any leftovers but not to expect first dibs at his dinner! And then, as payment for our kindness, trying to threaten my wee dog is totally inexcusable. War will be declared.:(
