thems tyres are Geolander rock stomper tyres arn't they? Well they are on the Radio Control parts department.

I was tempted with the volvo portal ends and HD shafts for a rover axle although I havn't got 2k spare it certainly is the way to go. I think Beaker spotted the kit on a German 110 which looked good without looking too silly unlike that Disco monster truck.

why spend 2k for volvo portal ends and the mods to fit a rover axle when it will get you the whole massively stronger axle?

the discobreakers disco looks silly not because of the axles it is running, but because of the immense lift and 54 inch boggers. that vehicle isnt exactly designed to be an offroading vehicle but an advertising one. there were definitely some nice portal axled vehicles rolling around with mog and volvo portals. nicest motor is saw was actually hughies 6x6 running strengthened converted rover axles and a massively tuned td5. got 35 inch tyres and can get 113 out of it

hopefully not too long now the bits are here. lots needs doing to it, but doesnt have to happen all at once

TBH if your using drop boxes with a decent reduction in them then HD rover shafts will be quite adaquate for most things if thr vehicle weight is below 3 tonnes. Because the torque is produced in the hub via the gearing reduction the shafts diffs don't take the strain as opposed to a standard axle where the diff/shafts are final drive components and where the final gearing reduction takes place (in the diff).

tell that to the people that have tried jai. ever thought that perhaps there was a reason behind people running certain types of axles? you only got to look at the majority of larger tyred vehicles and you will see portals. by the time you have massively beefed up a rover axle you will be left with a bloody big bill, and the axle itself still is not nearly as strong a unit as a portal, and you havent got the benefit of the added ground clearance.

jai, i know you are a big fan of your high horse, but for christ sakes sometimes you gotta get off it

Yes, Actually I have. You are quite correct they are expensive to get a bullet proof rover based axle With Difflocks but they can be as stong as some portals if not stronger.

Unfortunatly by design they are weaker because they were designed to ultimatly carry less weight and to run less torque through their components than that of the trucks. Its like saying if I fit Catapillar tracks they are stronger than rover axles. Then yes I agree. I quite agree

Just out of curiosity How many people broke axle components in comps such as the Howling wolf challenge last year aswell as many other serious competitors in the AWDC and what did they break and why? how many ashcroft failures?

Yes how many ashcroft setups in this years and any previous years serious comps vs how many portal competitors??

Its quite simple really Some Portals are cheaper and you benefit of getting difflocks without spending a fortune. Also by design portals are better for the job If you require ground clearance because the axle casing and diff sit higher and are therefore less likley to get hung up as you have said. Another reason is that the parts are readily available from Czech Republic and were being sold for a ridiclious price when I was over there 4 years ago.


Buying a portal axle with difflock can be WAY cheaper than buying an Ashcroft setup which is and has always been THE tried and tested upgrade for many competition vehicles. Detroit or Quaiffe difflocks and Ashcroft shafts cv's were up until recently THE setup to use here and in the states for our vehicle size competition vehicles.

Gigglepin are working closley Ashcroft and have built even stronger CV's and shafts to fit a stronger Ford/Yank hypoid diff (similar to salisbury design) for serious competition use.


Portals are better because of where the torque is produced I.E In the hub it means that you actually stress the shafts diff less.

Disagree you can get them stronger than some portals available. A beefed up salisbury front and rear with HD shafts is the way to go here. Ashcroft don't do them yet I don't think, but you can redily get the internals from the states and running 35 or even 40 odd spline Dana (salisbury) internals are as strong as you get for these small axles. The above internals have been uses to some success on some of the most competitive mud boggers in the ststes for many years.

By using Rover/Salisbury/Dana setup you keep the wheels within the track of the original vehicle. Its also means that you can use all the uprated equipment and have no need for an engineers report or SVA or whatever you need nowdays to get a modified vehicle road legal.

True I agree, but depends somtimes its detrimental to have the vehicle lifted too high. When you fit the truck portals its quite common to have to lift the vehicle alot to get the large axle case to clear the chassis or bind up. What you are doing is very commendable and it should be an awsome hybrid it will take lots of sorting but it should be worth it for your needs.

Well I'll get off it and Say I think you are doing a cracking job here with your 110 an interesting idea that should be great and I can't wait until the axle/offroad setup is used/proved.

Nothing To Date is anything like what you do in a serious competition.

Simple FACT is. If we like it or not. We (myself and you, Carpy) We would run into reliability problems and wouldn't get very far in a serious comp without either a wad of dosh to pay somone to help or a huge spares package.

I have been to and marshalled some serious comptitions around the country and to be fair the old boys doing it may look like old farts but these guys knows their S*it and they all say, No they Shout Ashcroft!

I have no real interest in the yank offroad stuff TBH and have kept out of it as its a huge void of money swollowing bigger tyres than you, my balls are bigger than yours and its just a bit childish. If I wanted that I'd buy a boat!

I know what I know (not alot TBH) because of an intrest I have a hobby and being there involved in it comps/mechanics/owning and rebuilding a few. I know a few bits n bobs because unless I learn and do the work myself I would be permenantly off the road! I wish I could afford and trust somone else to work on my vehicle but I can't! If learning is a resulting factor of my skintness tightness or high expectations I will not apologise for any knowledge that I have gained because I have earned that right because I have been there working under mine and others vehicles in the ****ing rain at midnight fixing it for a comp or whatever the next day. If by sharing the knowledge helps somone i'll help them if they wish to be helped.

Don't get me wrong I'm just a guy with an intrest. same as you and everyone on here. I don't know what I said to you and can't see your problem. You have some sweet axles, you have a great idea and have got on with it. From your list some sweet vehicles too. Maybe you should go enjoy owning them and chill out!

Hello Brett are you up for the next comp in Oct? I have almost sorted out my carbs on the 80 inch so a fuel line, a charged battery and It may spin over and fire (Alledgedly).
