Any of you (local) guys got any experience of removing a sheared off steering stop bolt?

Went to adjust them the other day after I put my 285's on and the nearside one sheared off....theres a bit sticking out but I have no experience or equipment to remove the offending item! Its being MOT'd and taxed today so I can take it to Billing at the weekend but dont want to go there with my tyres catching on lock!

Hi there,

Well TBh

I used to leave my steering stops wound in so my tyres caught the radius arms once you get used to it its not too terrible.

You did release the lock nut before adjusting didn't you? I'd try wire brushing the thread, then soaking on diesel/wd40 if that doesn't work drilling and using an easy out

I would do that but it makes a right old racket with mud tyres lol

I didnt realise there is a locknut, on the drivers one I just put a socket over it and turned, it come out easy as pie....then the passenger one snapped

Wheres the locknut, on the same side as the nut itself? I dont recall seeing one

I'll give it a good soak then have another go with a pair of molegrips, failing that i'll go buy a drill and some easyout things and try that!

way back when i used to lock the wheel against the radius arm to get out of a tricky situations. Not advised but it would work occasionally.

I think the bolt is 3/4 or 19mm and there is a larger nut 21 or 22mm that is behind and locks against the swivel housing. You need to Hold the 19mm bolt still while you undo the lock nut all the way Until its right up against the 19mm bolt head.
Then you can wind out the stops until you are happy then hold the 19mm bolt while you tighten the lock nut. Hope this helps.
If its all mumbled sorry got flu/man flu

Hehehe!!

Hi Dan, long time no hear - thought you had fallen off the planet or joined the foreign legion or something. Glad to hear all is well.

I'm planning to be at Billing tomorrow so maybe catch up some other time unless you fancy stopping by for a cuppa on your way home.

Hi Lee, got your txt no worries mate I'll get it rolling whack a gearbox in it and flog it on ebay now I have so many axles in my way.

i'll be in the car too landy still axleless could do with buying a rear a frame ball joint i hate the idea of an axle swap and not changing it even tho its not gone it must be at least 7 years old.

I'll be there tomorrow too, as will Kris. Beaker do you still want to borrow Morocco Overland, or do you have it already ?

And I'll be in the Landy, cause the new girl I just hired wrote off my work van on her first day

Yeah, but is she hot?

I'm still going to Billing, but not in my Landy. I've found a crack in one of the front chassis rails that needs welding before I subject it to any further abuse.
I'll be with my B-i-L in his wife's Gaylander 2. The shame of it.

Carpy well my landy is rear axleless at the moment will be putting the 4.7 ratio axle on as soon as I shift this Flu thing. Seems pointless fitting new drum brakes to it.

How much you looking for your axle/axle ends?

sensible offer dude, you know what these things are worth. if you dont use it mark will use it for parts so its no biggy either way

Hi Carpy,
What bits does mark need? diff shafts or the brakes? I have salisbury axles everywhere i turn. I only need the ends caliper mounts really will have a look today when I get to billing cos there is bound to be some kicking about. Wish i brought some a few years back but sound proofing was more important back then lol

Well Yesterday was a good day out. Good to see everyone again.
Got some good ideas on how to put some storage into the landy.
Weather managed to hold out, only got a soaking the once.
