Coil springs or not coil springs

It cost me around £150 to lift my P38 about 2inches on coils. They were 2nd hand of which I think the front set are older as they seem lower. I don't believe a garage around me would have repaired my EAS for that. It was 20 years old and completely shot

And with EAS you can have 5" of ride height adjustment for free, just press a button even has a feature of over inflating the bags if she senses all 4 wheels spinning EAS will over inflate the bags to allow the wheels to gain traction, ain't no springs that can do that ;)

EAS is simple once you understand it..

if its working, and you can repair it cheaply,for all the will in the world this isnt allways the case

Well yes.

But if you're cashing into the RR world no matter the age, you'd have to be prepared to either learn the basics and fix it yourself, or stomach the inevitable costs a mechie would charge to fix a basic system...

no your just buying a large cheap 4x4 to do a job, its nice when people want to keep vehicles pristine etc but its not compulsory or shouldnt be

At an extra cheap price i'd be guessing EAS would be the least of anyones troubles ;)

Cheap P38s that work today are few and far between..

in real life there are a good few, most is robust eas is a well known weak point, now a few on here have found the expertise to sort this , that aint an option for all

'Tis a well known weak point, but if maintained the Advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

Boge or Dunlop Bags are cheap when compared to Springs and Valvebody and compressor rebuild kits are cheap..

And with a afternoon all can be replaced/rebuilt.

yes but as ive said many times not everybody have the ability,and that usually means a large bill from a garage with the thought tthis aint the last of it

Oh yes i agree to what you're saying regarding cost..

But..
A good independent will do the job.
A refreshed EAS system will last`well depending on the bag quality 8-10 years surely. If this was done on a cheap scrapper P38 the system would outlast the rest of the car..

yes at considerable cost,theres a tendency for garages to only use new parts for several reasons, i get some of my work because independents as well as dealers wont repair,and with the p38 its more than just the bags

that's the thing.. EAS is *not* a well known weak point. its a well ignored and misunderstood point.

I've had mine 7 years.. I had a corner drop due to a leaky airbag due to perishing. I replaced all the airbags together. you know if one ha perished the other 3 are about the same age. so change them together. I also bought a £30 valve block overhaul kit and a compressor overhaul kit. and DataTek's cable and software. never had a problem with it in the 6 years. since.

mine is not a good one, it's a *maintained* one. springs perish and crack, airbags perish and leak. there is this concept that the EAS is complex. its really not. it has a pump, an air tank, air springs and airlines and a computer to control it. that's it. like any system it needs maintenance, its neglected ones that fail. garages who are clueless or don't have a simple cable and plug misdiagnose or give owners incorrect information. that's it noting more, nothing less.

I learnt to fix it myself as cheaply as possible - with coils ;) My choice was partially due to my inexperience with air suspension, but also from their problematic behaviour when they often go wrong

As above posted by @ukadamwest its a simple system once you understand it, and it doesn't go wrong as often as people think as long as its maintained ;)

yes it is as my customers and others frequently tell me , ill fix stuff but many wont and faced with large garage bills ,arent suddenly going to become diy mechanics and learn enough to do it themselves, id be interested in what maintenance you can actually do ? there no grease points or adjusters or lube changes,
 
That's P38's all over, ultra reliable if you keep on top of the maintenance. I do find no airbags is one less thing to worry about when sticking her in the mud, maybe one day il upgrade to a nice set of airbags, but for now I'm happy. I am interested in how much the OP will get it fixed for. Let's hope it's just a compressor rebuild and the odd leak :)

they don't.

2xP38's in the family and the failures on one are zero. a perished bag is not a failure it's wear and tear. the valve block and compressor were overhauled as preventative. the other P38 in the family had a perished airbag and all 4 were replaced, the only failure due to a perished diaphragm that took 17 years since manufacture to occur. a couple of quid part and an hour to change it. both had arnott GenII's back when arnott were giving a lifetime warranty.

2 P38's with 14 years of use between them and the only 'failures' have been wear and tear. so they haven't gone wrong. rubber has perished and they are both 2001 vintage. i've replaced more water pumps in that time on both of them.

The Rubber Bags perish over time i personally spray them with a rubber rejuvenator every now and then to help them last but of course the adhesive doesn't last forever so eh you should get
8-10yrs from a quality bag..

Aside from that just keep an eye on the system and watch the compressor doesn't burn out from constantly feeding a leaky bag..
