I'm a bit late to the thread, but I have an '82 County 109 which also has a low mounted rear wheel carrier which is as it came from the factory, so as not to obscure rear visibility I believe. My dad did tow a boat with it, and the options at the time were to mount the spare wheel on the bonnet, move it up the back door, or fab a lower mounting hitch. He went for a lower mounting hitch made out of 3/4 inch plate bolted to the cross member with a couple of supports angled up to the chassis.
Looks like an interesting project - are you going semi authentic, or full custom?
yes now ive mentioned it ive seen loads myself - i will raise it up as im not too bothered about rear visibility and i will use it for towing.
i think semi-authentic describes my plans better:)

not had much free time this weekend but managed to fit the new coil i can now get a spark from the coil so the old one was knackered! just now cant get anything from the dizzy so i'll fit the new points ive got - slowly getting there......

fitted new points today and got a spark at the plugs - also anyone know what the gap should be as i just set it rough?

also fitted the master cylinder for the clutch - in the end i sealed it with 2 copper washers and a steel washer spacer - should be ok

decided to drop the fuel tank next to clean it out and renew the line - no real point getting it started and then having to do it

0.014-0.016" will do you, I set mine to 15 thou and it runs well.
thanks i'll give that a go :)

managed to get some time on it today got the petrol tank off to unblock the blocked pickup pipe - bit of a suprise as i thought it would only have the 10 litres or so i put in but it was nearly full......... of 20 year old petrol - really dark in colour - so im going to completely empty it paint up the tank as so far it looks ok then fresh petrol before i have a go at starting it

then i'll use up the old petrol diluted a bit at a time .................. cant let it go to waste:eek:

also got both rear springs off ready for the parabolics

and welded in the new rear outrigger - but found a few more rot spots in the chassis i'd not seen before - still nothing that cant be fixed............. so far:rolleyes:

Sounds like a nice bit of progress, soon be out on the lanes with me! :)

So whats the progress luke? (just thought id post and give it a bump too ;))

thought i'd wait untill there actually was some progress before i replied, not had much free time lately but on the plus side my kitchen is nearly in:D

not much but......... today i took the pickup pipe out of the tank and it was completely blocked i had to use a drill bit to clear it out, i also removed the gauze on the end of it - i dont know what the general consensus is but ive done plenty of Di into mk1/2 transits and they need the in tank filter removing or you can't get enough flow - so i thought i'd remove it as i plan to fit a 200/300tdi in the future :)

i ordered a full set of GB parabolics - they have turned up today :)

they are marked n/s and o/s but no front and back - i take it that it doesnt matter which way round they go??

not done a great deal since the last update but ive got a set of wellers, backs are fitted but more importantly i collected my good 2nd hand rear crossmember today - just got to weld it on now :)
