Been out and recce'd a few more lanes.
So for the day out on Jan 11th ...
There'll be three sections that might be a bit scratchy, say for maybe 200 yards total for the day, maybe a mile of lanes that are likely to be muddy, but have never been deep enough in mud to touch my Disco axles whatever the weather, and about 100 yards worth of bumpy stuff, and there are a few hundred yards where there are some ruts, but I would think any 4x4, even my bro's Nissan X-Trail on road tyres would get through everything without getting stuck. I only used lo-box on one area and didn't need diff-lock at all. There's certainly nothing dangerous, unless you drive like a tw@. Many of the lanes are almost virgin green lanes with little to no traffic, other than horses and walkers, hence some of the undergrowth. Some are along field edges, so can get churned by tractors, but nothing too deep, some are through woods, some sandy, some grass, overall a right mixture. 'Course, all the conditions mentioned above depend upon the weather a lot, so 'be prepared' ...
Against this, a few are 'normal' farm tracks with the associated potholes and ****e, there's a few miles of normal roads, A roads, a short (400 yards) section of the A1, but a fair distance travelled on lanes rather than roads. I also do a route in Yorkshire Dales that has much more gnarly lanes, but they are shorter with more roadwork between them!
One area has an equestrian centre with gallops etc so we might get held up there a while until a string of horses goes through, but all the lanes I'll take you are legal, most are also either marked byways or marked as full roads that are in disrepair.
I think it'll make a decent short day out, I'd guess start at 10am and be finished by 2pm. PM me if you're interested, I wouldn't want more than, say, 6 vehicles.
Cheers.
