Yeah I thought it was decent, especially as I got a reply after about 10 minutes, from the sales manager! So fair play to them at least :)

Ian, the crack is on the join between the ball itself and the narrower shaft part so should be visible at any angle.

Only hairline really but I noticed a rust stainnwhich alerted me to it!
 
ive never seen a chrome ball snap like that except crash damage from the army but then it was ripped out pins not metal fatigue ,it seems some parts are really ****e now

Yep, they are definitely a **** material.

You can just tell from the break that they are so brittle, the metal seems very 'dry', not shiny at all, like a matt grey powdery stuff.

No expert on cast iron but it doesn't look like quality metal.
 
we have had casting break on our 360 machines, the right amount of force and stress they will snap, we have had them welded, (BAE ship yard welders) but even sometimes they go again, i would think the your wheels are to blame, big tyres, wider track, the amount of torque it takes to turn the steering wheel and down force the car exerts, something gotta give, Oh and your right foot having a blast off road, never happens when your not using it:smash:
 
First of all, Impressive repair job out in the field Sam. I would have been fooked (im about to replace the swivel seal on my drivers side and that job is making me nervous) Secondly, yes it probabbly is due to the huge offset of the wheels but like you said, surely comp safari trucks put just as much if not more strain on the swivels. Its not that common from the sounds of it.
 
Anyway, just have to deal with it.

A courier just turned up out of the blue to collect the broken swivel, it took me by surprise.

Would be nice if they would replace it, purely out of brand reassurance if nothing else!

is it a heaver duty thing or am i onto something different!
what axle is under a defender as they are built for work?
not really clued up on axles, but he did fookin well, to do that in the conditions he was in, most people wud of cried

Yesterday's good friend Neil has since become Mr. Nonchalant and tells me that it could take a few weeks to sort out, in a particularly cavalier manner.

Not feeling the cost warmth of caring that I was feeling yesterday :(

Tried to urge an answer out of him by telling him I was debating whether or not to purchase another spare swivel and the response was somewhat weak.

If the relationship between myself and britpart becomes sour I will attempt to lay the 100,000 views on thick but I don't imagine it will have much effect.

If they point out the offset of your wheels as being a possible cause then point out that they sell wheel spacers which achieve near enough the same offset as your cool looking deep dish steelies.

I actually chose my pictures carefully to not show any wheel shots, just in case, but yes you're completely right there.

I mean people grumble about wheel bearings but at no point is the swivel supposed to break.

It you buy an aftermarket stub axle with that break aswell?
 
looking at your swivel, especially the way the king pin holes are bust,
and the best part of the rear of the swivel is missing,
seems the forces were laterally backwards
(front to rear, as in wheel being run into a solid object and kinetic force of the rest of vehicle transmitting all the force thru swivel,
or worse still the the same force under heavy breaking! )
and not axially (in line with axle, which you'd expect with the extra leverage of wider wheels)

in my mind, the weakest point has always been
the bolts holding the swivel to the axle tube.
half a dozen bolts, ok so theres a boss on the
swivel that sits inside the tube, but the leverage
on the bottom bolts when driving obstacles?
still, never seen bolts shear off either.

just my two penneth worth o thought!
 
Oh yeah defo dude, it actually occurred when crossing some shallow ruts.

Honestly they were shallow and rounded and nothing serious but it must have just been the right shock at the right time and it swiped it clean off!
