RAV 4 drives like, feels like - is Front Wheel Drive, sort of.
So if you like Corollas.

Remember yonks ago thinking of buying one for SHMBO.
Out of dealership, turned left onto road....
Four left turns and I was back there - told the sales jerk the rear diff
was a decoration, else it was broken, and to stick Corolla badges on
the thing. The device had so much trolque bias it was even an insult to
the old Tercel/Corolla wagons that *were* AWD's.
**** I was disgusted.
And yes, I dislike Front Wheel Drive cars and so does SHMBO.

I know stuff all about Asian "Off road so called" vehicles, and freely
admit it.

However I've been driving REAL 4WD vehicles long before you were born :)

You are probably right, I'm going on what she thinks, and says of the
thing.

I personally have not driven it or any other piece of Jap crap, and I
never will! Sorry, wrong. I did drive a Toyota Land Cruiser in Cambodia
for 4 months in early 1992, as it was the only transport the UN would
provide.

Fair dinkum! Never driven one and unlikely to do so :)
How ever I do have a Rangie in my sights. It's the only vehicle that will
feel happy sharing a BIG shed with two Jaguars and a Daimler Limousine.
They can swap steam and drip oil together :)

As far as lifting it goes a mate went the whole hog with his LWB, a 2
inch spring lift, a 2 inch body lift and while cutting off the spring mounts
to fit wide track axles he also added another 2 inches to the mounting
brackets, he then fit 10R15's on F100 rims which gave him plenty more width
for stability, and it all looked proportional, nobody really could pick how
high it was until we saw it parked next to a stock one, towering over it by
a foot and making it look like an LJ50.

He had front & rear Lockrites which made it a pig unfortuneatly.

Get over yourself already :)

I find working on my December '90 'lux easier than my friends '83
Landie. A lot easier.

The Landie requires "creative engineering", but on the 'lux the
parts just fit into place. I won't even get started on the Landie
wiring (actually I did - ripped it *all* out and rewired it :)

Of course, you would have a point that real 'lux's have not been
available since late 1997.

'lux = Toyota Hilux.

Gotta love someone who enjoys fixing old cars, and fixing and fixing and
fixing
I like to drive my cars and hate fixing them
thats why I drive Toyota 4WDs

Same here, I had to search all the car yards in town to find a sub $3000
rear wheel drive car suitable for a broke student, all the cheap imports are
front wheel drives and people keep the rear wheel drives until they're
totally done for.
I don't drive anything less than 2L and RWD with a towball.
Since having to hunt for those cars (Nissan Laurel Medallist and a few years
previously a Mitsi Galant Sigma) I got myself a cheap Isuzu Bighorn 4x4 for
hunting trips. great truck.

I wouldn't call that the deciding factor in a lot of cases....

My wife's old Suby Sportswagon will go just about anywhere, and it makes my
father's Vitara wagon look ****ing hopeless :)

Noddy.

You're welcome, It just seemed like a simple common sense approach, I
suppose so few drive cars now dating back to the days when Metric was taking
over from Imperial and new cars came marked in both, Here in NZ that was the
early 70's and just how many drive early 70's NZ new cars?

not a lot I guess... lol

Besides which, I can't afford a GPS speedo and being broke leads to thinking
sideways to get you car going again...

On the subject of little Suzi 4wd's, I wonder if anyone has tried
putting a Mazda rotary in one?

Apart from the scream of a vacuum cleaner and howling gears, the extra
revs should provide a higher cruising speed, although I'd still
recommend ear muffs :)

That was a popular conversion used on the two stroke early suzies, and it
spilled into the four stroke models for a while. A lot of those became RWD
cars at that stage.
Worked well.

and they're sold with totally highway tyres, they know what their market is.
I love those crappy little nudge bars people put on them...to help with
parking in those Westfield carparks, I suppose.

Like those Discos and Rangies my Vitara passes, as they're struggling around
in the carpark that has 6 whole inches of snow in? The Vitara and I are
pretty unimpressed with those English "off road so called" vehicles. Hell,
they can't even cope on-road, if there's snow on it.

Are Ravs front wheel drive? Yuck. That's one thing I really like about the
Vitara, it's rear wheel drive. I've been tootling around in the family
Peugeot 406 this last week, and the front wheel drive feel bloody awful in
aggressive cornering.
