L322 Newby needs help my 2005 4.2 Supercharged will not start

I got almost nothing, 0.5v
I'm charging the new battery which is at 13.1v at the minute, so I'll whip it off charge and back into the car and double check it!
If it stays at 0.5 volts, as others have said, the first check would be a jump lead from the battery negative to the engine block.
If that sorts it, the look for the earth strap from the engine to the chassis and the battery negative connection to the chassis.
If it makes no difference, it will be time to look for the starter relay, the owners handbook should help locate it.

Ok, I've got as mate on his way with a jump lead to act as an earth strap. Then I'll try the ignition again (with test too)

I put the earth straps on and it started first time!!

Seriously? Is there a reason that despite posts #56 and #57 saying engine earth , and you popping up as #58, that you ignored those two post for 6 weeks?


When the AA recovery came to get me home, he put a jump kit on and I asked about the earth, he said this rules it out because the kit earth's it, he said it's the starter motor (I also checked the earth strap visually to see if it had any breaks~it didn't). So when I got back I took it off, changed the contactors and put it back~started first time! Worked for a week then “same” issue, this time I tried earthing it myself and it worked!

Well he's a **** then. a jump pack links the battery to battery. Its still open circuit if the engine earth is incomplete. basic bulb circuit diagram !

Interesting, as it was the AA man who identified the engine earth problem on mine, after trying to jump start it. He thought it might be starter but tried a new earth 'just in case'. Maybe it depends on the mechanic , and how long they want to spend on the issue.

That sounds about right, all he wanted to do was bolt because he turned up in a tranny even after I specifically told them it was a auto rr and would need a low loader not a normal tow. He got another AA recovery to come scoop me up. It was both their last jobs for the day.:rolleyes:

Apparently that is standard AA practice. No matter what the customer says the first guy is sent out to assess. I suspect his response time is what they use for performance measurement. After that it can be days before you get further.

Had one car recovered to the garage off the M53 the AA man said starter motor problem The guy was cruising at 70 mph at the time,had to dip the clutch and coast to the hard shoulder. Yes the starter was clicking and not turning the motor over because the cam belt had failed and the pistons had kissed the valves!! Engine rebuild and burnt out starter replaced. Well done AA.:eek:

Well done,always check the simplest solution first.;)

Sadly, this is so. The man in a van turns up, even if you have an obvious 'it needs a flat bed' issue. He then mumbles about being sent to an obvious recovery job, and contacts them to send a flat bed. If it's a decent company a flat bed that can take a Range Rover will turn up. If it is a Karen Yuill of Hamilton outsourced recovery, they will send a guy who is not even sure that his truck can take the weight. Who will then proceed to try to leave you standing on the motorway hard shoulder, as he 'wasn't told he had to take you too'. Even when told it is illegal for pedestrians to be on the motorway , he will have to make 2 phone calls , to ask if he must take you!
I digress but in summary, yes a van is sent first, then you have to pray for a decent recovery.

You would be surprised at what some people will tell a breakdown company in order to get a lift home - whether its because they are tired, or want a drink, or have just bought a car and need to get it home, or.....
so yes, they will usually insist that the "breakdown" is professionally assessed before dispatching a flat-bed (only heavy commercials and buses get a low loader)

It has become standard practice now for Green Flag recovery to only take you as far as the nearest garage that can fix the vehicle - no longer your choice - and only if it cannot be fixed that day will they then Recover you.

Interestingly, the Lady that set up that alteration to the way that Green Flag operates....is now running the Recovery operations at RAC - you have been warned!!
