Nodge, here's a weird one.
Well I went out to disconnect the MAF to test and couldn't undo the clips that free it. so I made sure I hadn't partly move the connection and moved on planning to come back to it with more knowledge.
Anyway something was nagging at me and I thought I would open up the crank case breather and replace the old oil separator with my new one, which I did after giving the case a good wipe.
I then took off the turbo hoses and refitted them very tightly, more so than they were.
I put everything back together and went for a 40 mile drive up the motorway and back.
Far more power than I had, at least 70% less black smoke which now only happens for a moment when I kick down.
How is this possible and should this change the approach to a 100% resolve.

I bought 7 liters of this oil about 5 days ago £25 from Euro Car Parts, along with a Mann oil filter, Air filter and Fuel filter, Thought go out in a while and change the oil and do the filters as I have them sitting there.
the old oil is very black and thin. oil.jpg

Just bumped into a mechanic in the local Cafe and was having a chat with him and explained what I have done so far. yet another cracking reply form a mechanic (Maybe it it needs a long run to clear it out) followed by (you might need to clean the catalytic converter by taking it off an washing it out)
So far I have had suggestions that it might be the Fuel injectors, Turbo, Maf, Hoses, Solenoid, Fuel Pump, Crank case filter, EGR , LoL, that's half of the engine.
There's some logic in what he said.
The cat can clog up. Particularly if fueling issues have be present for a long period.
Also diesels do respond to a good run at motorway speeds. ;)

It happens sometimes. Maybe the MAF plug just needed re-seating. If the inlet air temperature sensor part of the MAF isn't making good contact, the ECU defaults to a cold engine setting.

You'll need 6.4 litres of oil for an oil change and a 36mm hex socket to get the oil filter cap off. ;)
