Hi Guys. My 'tired old girl' finally bit the dust in an icy accident when the good lady was "driving". I'm now looking to upgrade to an early 02 - 04 L322. Sadly funds pressure only permits me to looking the bargain basement / high mileage bracket. Any tips on what to avoid?
I'm a little disappointed that so many of those on offer have privacy glass......... My lads prefer the gizmos of Sat Nav etc but this seems to be more common on the Vogues.

If you're on a tight budget don't get a high miles L322. The gearboxes like to explode for fun. Whatever your budget, you need to keep 3k for a new box. At that point in time SatNav was still in it's infancy, so it isn't all that spectacular. Requires updating to the new BMW system but that is a couple of grand right there too.

L322 on a budget is a BIG gamble as Bix states....

The Early Diesel Boxes eat themselves, and the Petrol one suffers internal bearing failure.

Water Pumps fail overheating the engines, Rads spring lieaks, Expansion tanks split, PCV valves gunge up over pressuring the Crankcase causing potential engine seizure, Rear quarter leaks frying the Electronics underneath, Final Stage Resistors fail causing battery drains, ignition switches fail causing all sorts of electrical faults, Steering wheel motors jam and snap, CD players feck up, Suspension Bushes wear at an alarming rate, Air Struts will require replacement after 8 years or so, EAS compressors fail, EAS valve blocks wear, EAS pressure switches fail, All manner of electrical niggles that require constant plugging in and resetting, Door Lock Cables snap locking you out or in, Xenon Ballast fail, Alternators fail (and their water cooled and fecking expensive), VANOS system guide rails wear, and you have to replace the whole system as you can't just replace the rails ££££......

I could go on but I will just depress myself......why the feck have I got one??

Oh yeah....COS IT IS AWESOME....

The drive is second to none, the ride is sublime, the power is out of this world...the seats are comfy (others disagree), the thing is just worlds apart from the P38.....AWESOME.

better off getting a high spec HSE.

should be able to find one without tinted windows, you can fit an aftermarket stereo / satav which is 100 times better than the original outdated unit. usually cheaper than a vogue..

be careful though as there are some real basic HSE's out there.

the less electrical gizmos = the less stuff to go wrong ! lol

The td6 is lovely, and pretty cheap to run.

make sure you get one with a recent gearbox change and service history if possible and then your good to go.

dont expect P38 running costs from an L322 though :D

A big thanks to the above three - Bix, Saint & hippo. You've nearly succeeded in putting me off!! Budget is a BIG problem and a tough call to make but I rather fancied the newer model than a lower mileage high spec P38. Perhaps I should re-think. Anyway off on a hunt over the weekend and will be looking at dealers with guarantees now rather than risking my hard earned with private sales. KR's lads and keep up the good work advising the innocent.

don't be put off ! lol

whatever you do, do not go and test drive an L322....otherwise you will want one ! lol

if cost is a problem then I don't think a range rover is for you ?

When Hippo says there are some 'real basic spec HSE's out there' I let out a little LOL!
'One often struggles when one is given a Range Rover without rear heated seats'!- hardship at its worst!

My L322 has regally bashed my bank account since Christmas to the order of approx £2,500- g-boc rebuild, four new tyres, MOT, and 12 months tax- expensive beasts- BUT worth it if you have the cash lying about!

LOL,

just saying, there all the same price...so get one thats fully spec'd up :D

couldn't live without my heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated screen etc... LOL :D:D:D

But like you say- more to go wrong- i suppose mine is probably fairly low spec- no sat nav, heated rear seats or heated steering wheel. But more than happy with it!

yes very true.

i was just lucky with mine. to be honest i didnt even know what options it had when i bought it. i was a total newbie to range rovers so was pretty clueless.

luckily it was the same as a vogue spec...par the sat nav which im more than happy without as it allowed me to fit an aftermarket system :D

i think some models didn't have front and back parking sensors either ?
or xenon headlights etc...

the SE ?

Oh really, didn't know they did an SE model. Does yours have a sunroof? Mine doesn't but glad about that as well- I don't like them and they have a tendency to leak! Mine has got the front and rear sensors plus xenons- so not that downgrade!

SE were the very basic models. No Sunroof, Parking Sensors, Heated Seats or wheel, No Sat Nav....Basically the only 'toy' it had was a heated front screen and 7 way electric front seats.

The SE was dropped a year or two after launch and the line up became HSE, Vogue and Autobiography....then the Vogue SE came along

yep, they also did an SE version.

lowest of the low ! lol

yes mine has a sunroof, which was an optional extra (and yes i wish i didnt have it) :D

what badge does yours have on the back ?

Haha, so true! I had everything but engine failure and vans problems!

But they are awesome, nothing quite makes you feel the same when your driving it!

Deffo don't be put off by the 'horror' stories.

Just make sure that any vehicle you look at has got a good, regular and kosher service history. Number of previous owners and length of ownership of vehicle can often be an indication of whether the motor is a good'un or a pup... after all people will often get shot of a money pit sharpish rather than keep it running.

My best tip is that if you get a L322, get the gearbox oil and filter changed straight off. It will give you an indication of whether the g/box has been looked after or trashed, and what condition it is in.

Sat Nav & sound system etc fills with water in addition to all the other problems others have listed, they are an electronic nightmare and electronics is what I did for a living. They also rust like an early Classic.
A late high spec diesel P38 will give you better service and leave you with cash to fix it.:)
