P38A Key advice for Duchess

Update- spoke to Les at classic rides and he gave me a few pointers to look at. Removed the battery cover off the one I fitted the britpart fob repair kit to and checked the battery contacts and all looked good but the cover was very tight. I compared the BP cover to the heavily butchered original and noticed that the terminal in the cover was in a different place and was barely making contact with the terminal in the fob!
Stuck the original battery cover on and it works!:D:D.
However, I tried the working fob cover and batteries in fob 3 and that still doesn't work. It only opens the driver's door in the lock, the other 3 doors stay locked and I get the engine disabled message. I wonder if @brianp38dse is correct and it's a valet key? Would have thought all doors would unlock though.
Anywhoo, 2 working keys is a result.

Someone might have got a key off eBay and cut a new blade for it hoping it would just "sync". I've seen adverts suggesting as much. There are a few people who can reprogram a key but it isn't straightforward.
 
What I did notice on this key 3 (it's actually got the number 3 on the back of the fob on a sticker) is the battery contact on the PCB is not like the other 2 keys, it has a coiled spring rather than 3 prong things.. this spring looks like a repair... doesn't look 'factory' .
 
I was under the impression you can only have 2 active "FOB" keys plus a non-FOB blade.
This is why (I thought) if you rocked up to LR for a replacement because you have lost key FOB-1, they got you a FOB-3.
 
Yes, if you have 2 'fob 1' then only one will work. If you're not sure what you have, then you order one you think you don't have, ie fob 3.
Easy to tell which you have if you've got memory seats

So everything might be as it should then with mine. Key 3 does have the buttons/led as the other two though even though the buttons don't unlock and it'll only unlock the driver's door and won't start the engine.
Not sure how useful that feature would be unless I'm missing something or its faulty.
Had a panic this morning:eek:
I took the Doris to work then travelled on to eurocar parts to pick up stuff.
I was using key 2 which I repaired yesterday rather than key 1 (which has been faultless and is the key I've always used since ownership).
Came out and it wouldn't turn over:mad:.
Then realized I'd left it in drive when I parked up:rolleyes:.:D:D
I'm sure I've got a bit more grey hair:D

I think up to 4 work but I think only 1 and 2 work with the memory seats. My seats are manual so not an issue. The key number is transmitted as part of the code sent to the BECM.
