Afternoon folks :).

Its been rather drizzly and yucky last couple of days:( But then it is December so shouldn't complain.

Just back from handing in my forms to immigration office, all looks good, even my chicken scratching's in Bulgarian seemed to have past muster, Got a photo and fingerprints taken. She handed me a little ticket (again) with a date to go back and pick up the new card on Thursday:banana:.
That's that done, It should be a 10yr card this time.

Just gonna kick the fire and load it then sit in the warmth for the rest of the day.

I may take up your suggestion🍻.
But take no notice of any advise I may give later;).

Hope your leccy guy sorts you out tomoz, cant be fun without having the luxury of heating on tap.

I've had a look around at the pump connection, which is fine, although I haven't tested to see if mains is coming through to it cos the mains to it has to be switched.
Also at the old motorised valve and the new one's wiring diagram and installation instructions.
And these say, in black and white, unhelpfully.
"If the programmer has no "HW off" connection, change the programmer."
Well whoopee-flipping -do!
As I explained to the plumber, the new programmer which does have the "HW off" facility, as it has the possibility of "CH only" this is piggy-backed onto the original boiler controls which only has "HW only" or "HW and CH". So it to all intents and purposes doesn't have "HW off".
Now there may theoretically be a way of putting an extra wire from the new programmer to the valve, but honestly, unless the sparks can find a work around I don't think it is going to be happening. The plumber cut the wire leading to the old motorised valve pretty short, too short to be able to easily reattach the rest of the original wire to it.
But if push comes to shove I'll do this short term. So back to the old noisy but working motorised valve.

I think some of the problem is that the plumber is quite young and maybe not used to the older systems that work like ours does.

Anyway, we'll find out tomorrow.

Spent all day underground all first coat 50m2 on the walls 2nd coat tomorrow gets harder the older you get and working by yourself the price to pay for what and were we are . Solar is coming alonge going for 25kw storage LFP batteries with a backup of 5kw useing are old batteries so should be good 🐀

Pics needed for your solar set up. :) :)

take the programmer front of the back plate on the back you should see a little slider that says 10 or 16 if its on 10 put it on 16 and you should be able to have heating with out hot water, as that potterton programmer was made to run a gravity system or a fully pumped one there will be a little diag on the back that will show you the internal switching you may be able to wire in a hot water off cable.

Hi Brian!
Thanks for this.
I spent a lot of time researching all this and did come across a mention of the 10/16 issue. I took the front off the back plate and eventually found where the two switches are, in their little hole. The 10/16 switch was already in the 16 position. I also saw the wiring diagram in the back of the programmer but the whole thing is stymied by it all having to be connected via the original boiler's two-way programmer.
The wiring in of an extra cable would be impossible, or nearly so as the boiler is in the utility room which is separate from, although connected to, the main house so has its own roof. The tank, pump and "diverter valve" as I am now going to call it, are all in a cupboard above the stairs on the second floor. so the wires go lord knows where. They start off in the outermost wall of the utility and come out in the tank cupboard.
However, I have just discovered that Honeywell still make the V 4073A 1039 Sundial valve. So I wish it had been taken off by the plumber, seen and then a new one ordered.

The system requires a pump over run facility and I am not sure he was ever going to be capable of wiring that in. Even the wiring diagram that came with the one he brought in, a TotalHome TTH223MMV, made apparently by Resideo, has a little section which mentions "heat sources requiring pump overrun" but it is unclear where the SL wire goes apart from to junction 10 on the 10 way junction box. There are two wires that lead away from the top of junction 10 but no indication as to where they go beyond that.

On the face of it the two motorised valves ought to be more or less identical, but that is only on the face of it.

The sparks who is coming tomorrow rang me today and we had quite a good conversation. He kind of "got" the issue and agreed that the lack of a "HW off" connection could well be at the bottom of it. He's still coming to have a look, but I am not optimistic. I think I will end up having to get an exact replacement and then plumbing that in, or getting the plumber to do that for me.

What may be important is that we are quite happy to not be able to switch to CH only. We never have been able to and our gas bills are quite low. Plus it is nice to not have to think about switching the hot water on and off. All we want is what we had before.
Anyway, as they say about tomorrow, "It has got 2 chances".
