This is no gentlemens' agreement it is a "pret a usage" a legal contract which means that neither party gets any monetary profit out of it, simply each of us are doing the other a favour, he is keeping my land in fine fettle and we are letting him keep his horse on it.
I was more annoyed at you thinking that I hadn't even considered how the horse was going to be fed, watered and sheltered.
And no, he won't be able to mess me around. The closest he could come to that would be to put his horse on the land and then give me notice of leaving. which would make no sense at all.
Or, put it on the land and refuse to leave after i have given him notice, in which case he would be in breach of contract and I could legally get a bailiff to throw him off.
These contracts are very common, nothing dodgy about them at all.
The law CAN be difficult if you go in with your eyes closed and let a farmer actually start farming your land. But that is a completely different thing.

I am a bit surprised that she doesn't just want to do a "do it yourself" divorce which costs nearly nothing. It is what I did.
But then we don't know the back story and where the bitterness, if there is any, has crept in.
And whether she has someone influencing her.
Once one of you has "abandoned" the other for 5 years , then a divorce is extremely easy. Just a question of filling in the paperwork.
I get the feeling that she has decided to try and fleece you of whatever you have got.
As I said, hang on to your dosh.
I believe you can get a free half hour with a solicitor at the Citizen's Advice Bureau, I did that once.
Mind you he took 15 minutes telling me what he wouldn't do in the time!

Smart French clock from well let's just say a long time ago. Even had the French instructions inside it, very flimsy they were by then! Goes with the faintl;y Art Deco lounge/diner keeps good timem and chimes charmingly. Cost £20 plus fees at the usual auction.

Went for a long while then stopped. Needs, well, you've all seen the bloke on Repair Shop. Either a good clean and the spring extending out, cleaning, lubricating and putting back in, or simply a rebushing job.

And here is one from the hall.

Which W paid a lot of money for, in a workshop in the Dales one Christmas. Does very well, keeps excellent time and chimes nicely too. It might be a done-up antique, or a repro or summat else, don't care really.
So there you go!

Must confess wall clocks or grandfather clocks whilst look very nice would send me round the twist with the constant ticking

Just something that would be like torture

Went into a jewellery shop ages ago and they had 10+ clocks all ticking

No, don't get me wrong!
I love my lappy and use it every day, you may remember I wrote my books on it and use it for loads of stuff, spreadsheets for the cellars, google maps, etc etc etc, as well as chatting to you lot.
All my pics are stored on it, (And a back up thingy when in the UK).
So no, I am not knocking tech as such, TBH, I'm knocking the barstaff who run it and change stuff once you've bought it and got used to it, just to make money. And mostly for me this is to do with phones.
And as you are pointing out, it can do surprisingly good stuff. But again, I was sort of relying on the compass in the phone, tech again, yet it let me down.
(W you can put the humble pie back in the fridge now, only eaten a tiny portion.);););)
