Screwy:

Do you have 2 phones? I thought I helped out a rangie boys mate Gareth yesterday? Cos he is in my phone as welshy for some reason I dunno. Hows your mota if you ave somewhere to do the work and it is indeed a cv joint its not a major problem. Although it must have had no oil in there as the old 90 ones are beefier and all the competition boys use these larger CV's. If its a Diff its probably easier to do. Let me know how you get on Im about from 6 til 7 tonight if you want me to ave a look. Jai

Jai:

The number I called you on yesterday is my main number, not sure if I called you on my other one as it's a work phone. My week is upside down as I'm on nights so all this just makes it even more awkward otherwise I'd have come round.

i think a few people broke there 4x4 yesterday, i took the missus to see her mate baby at stoke mandeville hospital, on the way the vacuum hose that goes from to turbo to the fuel pump had moved on to the manifold and melted so was barely doin 45 up th a41 and decided to come off and go along the back roads and all i seemed to see was muddy 4x4's bein towed or on a trailer and 1 in hemel left next to a round about with one wheel up on the curb, looked fun tho i wish i could of made it whaddon

There were at least 4 or 5 stuck yesterday that I saw, it was more of a practice in recovery than a play day, mind you, it was still fun though. I may not be saying if I've caused serious damage though.

ok, so it still wont start, drove home fine and used it a couple times last night, all the electrics are working but there is nothing when you turn the key, anything in a disco thats been drowned thats worth checking, drying etc? its a 300tdi and it sat underwater for about 10 mins, 3/4 of the bonnet and egine more or less.
will the hazard lights stayed on, and the only way to kill them was to stick a screwdriver in one of the terminals and short them, the fuse didnt pop and the indicators are all fine, any ECU's etc that i should check........ help need to use the car this week as mine is in for a service.

thanks, in advance

disco did you fit wading bungs? Why did you drive in there not knowing that you had a chance of getting out? Is your tdi fly by wire? Jai

sort out tested the depth in the middle but it was clearly a lot depper at the edge than i thought, bit stupid really. weird thing is it stayed running fine and i did a bit more playing that day in it, drove it an hour home, left it for an hour or so and went out again in it all fine. this morning dead! dont think its fly by wire is it? my TD5 is, any suggestions on what i need to open up and drain? cheers was quite a comedy moment as I genuinly didnt know it got that deep, lesson learnt...

hey every 1 im new to the site i live in borehamwood if theres any1 near me that wants to go green laning please get in touch im also heading up to the devils pit on the 15th march for a pay and play day if any one wants to drive up with us let me no cheers guys :)

do you have electrics lights on dash etc?

could be the starter mota being drowned liked mine was or could be cos its a landy lol just kidding

First of all do you have a cable going to your injection pump? Coes it connect directly to a leaver that goes onto a spindle that dissapears into the pump? If its fly by wire then the cable runs to a potentiometer Variable resistor/spindle etc. Yyou can usually tell by the ammount of wires or lack of around the inj pump.

If its a fly by wire it can be harder to diagnose but not impossible.

You say you have an alarm/immobalizer fitted. These can be a pain and work in several ways isolate the starter circuit. Isolate the inj pump solonoid or isolate them both. Gibbophil's Fronty immobalizer died the day before going to Salisbury plain last year. You will need to dive into the electrics and check to see what it actually does to immobalize your vehicle and check all the relays and
connections. Dry out any wet control boxes and I suggest you either bypass the immobalizer or make it watertight if you plan on doing similar in the future.

Ok its no good guessing faults you will spend a fortune and go nowhere. listen to all advice but go on facts that you have found by doing various tests. Once you know you are getting diesel and the engine is spinninng over at a reasonable speed and it still doesnt start, thats where it starts to get fun (it should be ok its a diesel nothing much to go wrong). Although I would bet your problem lies with the above formentioned immobalizer/starter/inj pump solonoid. but we can't guess it needs some simple checks to confirm Jai

So some questions must be asked:
1. Does your engine turn over?
2. Does it just make a clicking noise when you try and turn it over?
3. Does it sound like its spinning really fast with no load and not turning the engine over??

thanks for the reply Jai, wont be doing that again in a hurry no, i left it running when i bailed out and everything was working fine drove back up to the tea van left it running, opened the bonnet to make sure all looked ok and it did, the central locking had stopped working, when i dropped the bonnet the hazard lights all came on, I stopped the engine hazards still on, drove home about 1hr still no indicators and hazards still on parked it up took the front indicators out, and fiddled about with them they went out they went on etc, i then managed to short them out whilst testing the connection in one of the indicators, bridged with a screwdriver, the indicators all went out and started working as normal all good I hear you say, yep drove the car no problem that evening all electrics etc, central locking still not working.
this morning went to drive off and you dont even get a click of the starter, the lights indicators etc all work the only thing thats dead is the central locking, you turn the key and all you get is the lights on the dash go out thats it.
maybe worth mentioning that before going for a swim the hazards would all flash when you operated the central locking......
i will check all the fuses etc in the morning.

Sounds like your immobalizer is designed to cut the starter motor circuit. I would follow the ignition wire down to the starter solonoid via any boxes or alarm kit. Mabe for peace of mind and to confirm its not just a sticky starter I would put a meter on the pos terminal on the solonoid and turn the key see if you get 12volts there if not then something like a immobazer is kicking in. if you get 12 volts try fresh water over the starter and mabe a few taps but only if you are getting voltage to the solonoid (not the main battey cable to the starter)

Jai, this is very similar to what I experienced in the disco as we were leaving Salisbury. The collector on the alternator was at fault, it had got water and mud in it and wasn't making a decent connection. Once it had been removed cleaned and replaced it was fine. Just an idea

hiya Disco52
Yea its my dads disco the funny thing was we laid out the sections saturday for the tyro and sunday the kids come and drove my dad couldnt get over the ditch saturday but both girls managed it Sunday in the comp. Had to winch out a ccv mota saturday from a bomb hole with the land owner reckons 15 feet of water luckily the driver only found about 5 foot on the edge when he got suck all fun Jai

Ok guys I may have dropped a clanger here,

Is it the 7th we are due to go laning in essex? Staple Abbots? Isnt that near Stanstead north weald airfield? Cos I'm due to be camping at north weald on the 7th as we are helping out marshalling for the comp safari on the Sunday near nort weald? Or am I completly in the wrong area. Jai

The girls are learning to drive well well and as they were in a bog standard disco with a plough I believe they are just fine and would show some of us up us legal drivers at a comp. Anyone fancy avin a go? This Tyro are always safe non damaging RTV which is for raod going vehicles are more challenging but tyro is the best place to start for everyone. CCV is the more extreme but you really need to get the trialling rules and regs in your head and some experience before you go aheadf with that stuff.

P.S all the vehicles are banned from heavy suspension mods, difflocks, banned from silly size tyres and banned from really aggressive tyres all to keep it fair play and get the most out of your vehicle before bolting on your goodies. (but they may well let if go for a couple of events as long as there is no great advantage) Its all fair, its cheap and you might surprise yourself just how good a standard disco/defender/series is and mabe even get out driven by a 14 year old girl! Anyone up for it???

Jai

Definitely the 7th and from what I recall we were going round the essex area and the places you mentioned are all fairly close from what I remember. What you're talking about sounds quite interesting what's the deal??
