Hi just had it over the pit,put blocks by the wheels and tryed to drive it.
The prop seems to be jumping in the transfer box,
Does this meen the transfer box is knackered

If you mean the shaft comming out of transfer box, that attaches to the prop? is it moving then you have a worn bearing , are you sure its not the prop that is moving .

It may mean the chain in the transfer box is jumping over the drive gears. Pretty much knackered without a few new bits yes.
Hi is the transfer box the same as a discovery

sounds like free wheel clutch isnt working ie locking ,can be caused if worn ,but in a state of just working, and fresh oil with its detergent qualities effect it ,sometimes a real clean can cure them sometimes not , it means removing valve block and bell housing etc to get to, to replace it

Auto ? Your needs a bloody good jack , the motor propped up six pairs of hands and the most important, make sure the torq converter is located on its pump and stays there !

If you have never done it before good luck at the very least you need a pit and tranny jack !!! I know as the first one i done on a friends P38 with the motor on 4 axle stands on the workshop floor
the g/b and t/b weigh.............. a lot & took 2 & 1/2 days, the easy bit was dropping the lot out. Getting back in was another story and as grit says the t/c is a vital manoeuvre.My second attempt on another p38 was better as had more confidence and a pit

Peeps might laugh but, I made tiny little blocks that held it in place fixed to wire that I pulled out of the access hole . . worked for me : D

Hi I can borrow a mate of mine 2 post ramp so access is not a problem, just worried about the torque converter

A Range rover on a two post ramp, specially pulling and tugging gearbox in and out is NOT a very good idea. Two post ramps are NOT recommended.

Tip the box so that its standing upright bell housing facing up
Very carefully lower the torq converter in and locate in in the oil pump look at it first so that you can locate mating holes lower and turn until it sits in as long as you don't tip the box down hill it shouldn't come out and lose its place keep it pressed in as much as you can other wise your damage the pump when you bolt it up that's it really
Good luck
Just take your time and make sure you have released all cables and wires
Ps there is a bracket that is supposed to keep it place while you fit it you could make one out of a bit of aluminium
