DoorLock Replacement

The front passenger door lock on my 1988 110 CSW is no longer working in that it wont even latch so the door is currently held by bungee ropes. The bit it latches onto has a sleeve on it and that's ok and everything is lining up so its not an alignment issue but the actual latch mechanism in the door. I have a replacement and need to get out there in the rain and get it sorted. Fiddling around it feels like a spring in the mechanism has gone awol. I am just wondering if anyone has done this and has any tips that might speed it up for me? A search has not helped me sadly.

Have you removed the inner door panel and checked to make sure none of the rods are detached? If the door is merely banging against the striker it may be the mechanism isn't being reset properly, and it may be that simple. Only a couple of screws to check.

Considered that but I had the new lock anyway but fingers crossed as it would be easier wouldn't it! I doubt Im that lucky Doriz!

There is a pawl which drops down and latches the door, if this sticks it will not latch anymore. I had this issue last year and half a can of GT85 and some wiggling the pawl up and down with a screwdriver and it is working again. I'd try this before forking out, if you do fork out don't be tempted by cheap latches, they will last about a year and usually fail locked and shut which means you need to strip the door card in situ to fix it!

Ok advice taken. It feels as though one of the pawls is a bit loose and rattles as though it was sprung and now isn't. Ive oiled it all up today in anticipation of removal so will have a play and see if it frees up.

If it is loose feeling then sounds like it may indeed be broken,the springs will eventually yield.

I have replaced the mechanism and the door now latches so the old one was clearly broken but what a pig of a job! Very fiddly with the actual lock seeming much bigger than the access available. Anyway all back together but the complication is that the key is not operating the lock and the retro fitted central locking to the back doors is no longer working. But bad light stopped play along with the fact I was totally shattered having had spinal surgery mid December. However its one step forward in that the cars now usable without kids tumbling out the door but I would advise anyone doing this job to take plenty of photos as they go along.
