Devon & Cornwall green laning thread

I see, didn't know that, thought you were a new owner. Sorry about that!



We go out sometimes, but we keep to very small groups, especially right down West here, it is like a small island, and everyone knows each other.We like to meet people first, hence the pub meets



There is some talk of having a run up to East Cornwall, we may meet with some of the others up there, split into two groups, and do a run from different ends,something like that. We will keep you informed.



Actually round Bodmin there are not many lanes, at least not that I know of, but there are some down round Liskeard and in South East Cornwall. I can pm you some refs, but I haven't driven most of them for years, so I don't know if they are actually passable atm.



Try a PM to Jess0engineering, I think he does a few up there, he might take you out or make suggestions.



There is a lot of pressure to close the byways, but others are fighting it in a number of ways, hopefully we may get a few years yet, and there is talk about possible licencing schemes in another fred in the forum, that could be a way to preserve some access. Fingers crossed! Are you a member of Glass?

Yeah have never really been out with more than four for the lanes.

The I have looked at the OS map and have found nothing for miles. I'm up for any laning trip as I like that more than a pay and play site, vetting out to c the contrary side and all.

Have driven some in Warwickshire that haven't been driven on for years and it was fun.. Well for me the landy got scratched to hell.

I thought that we were to late to do any thing about the byways being closed. I would drive to Westminster if I thought it would help.

Am going to meet some of u this weekend at a pay and play and next weekend I'm at thunder park which is only two mile from me.

Sometimes tho , especially when buying stuff at auction, you can forget all the nitty gritty stuff like cam belt mileage

I am putting her in to steve toyer in Penryn to get some work done although if anyone here fancies some work :ahem turboman: i am willing to pay a reasonable labour rate to get the gearbox and brakes sorted before i come home!

Steve Toyer eh? I'd be interested to see how you get on and what his work/costs are like ...I've heard good and bad ...which I guess is the same for any garage. Will be lovely to have something to look forward to whilst you're out slumming it somewhere hot and exotic :lol:

Really? He's always been good with me whether it's just a pack of nuts and bolts or a few bigger bits but I've never got him to do any work on my vehicles yet.

I have messaged mr turboman to see if he knows anyone or would be interested in the work himself. I will let you know what Steve quotes me if he actually wants to do the work.

I'm thinking about a respray later on as well..... It's a really solid vehicle (ive put a few pics up of underneath and the bulkhead on another thread about respraying) and deserves some love to make it into a really nice and long lasting (this time) landy.

Edit: I wish i was somewhere hot and sunny! Its like Britain here in Italy!

Everybody has their own ideas about good landy garages ..i only spoke to him once when i rocked up to ask about undersealing ...was very helpful and polite, I'm sure he'll do a top job.

Round Bodmin is a very poor area for lanes, but there are some Boats and ORPAs in West Cornwall, and some others further east of you around Liskeard and in the Tamar valley.

I use the Cornwall Council interactive online map a lot, it has ROW Info, and any Modification orders, and you can zoom in much closer than Trailwise

Steve is very good but he's rather expensive, have you tried Andy Richards in Carharrack or Turbomans mate John Pollard they are more suited to series vehicles in my opinion. I'll be giving mine a refresh with a roller paint job soon as a decent spray job is about £100 a panel so for me it was £900 and I would never touch a bramble again if I spent that much. If your looking for your gearbox to be rebuilt James Martin on here knows what he's talking about.

Im sure you'll enjoy working on it when your home

I would like a gloss paint work but nothing extraordinary because as you say, it wouldn't go near anything!

I am still trying to research the history of the vehicle, there are two distinct possibilities of it's previous working life. Ex AA which doesn't really excite me, or ex miliitary runway vehicle! There are some clues like it's immaculate chassis and bulkhead from it being stored by the MOD in a garage during it's service, it's got some very neatly cut holes in the dash on the passenger side. Which makes sense because they always work in twos in runway vehicles for more eyes watching for aircraft than an AA mechanic being on his own and would need the radio near him. Most interesting is the duck egg blue engine and radiator and yellow paint. If that's the case, that's quite a different Beasty.

And so a restoration to an airfield vehicle would be cool!

When engines were painted duck egg blue it's normslly a military reconditioned engine, if you look on the side of the seat of drivers side most military vehicles had a plate stamped with its military number plate and a small about of info as to what it was built for. If you have this info you can get what's called a merlin report which gives you a lot of info and will answer your questions as to where it's setved and what it was used as. Ex AA normally have a Anderson jump start point somewhere on them.

Well just had a quote back from Steve, £392 plus vat for gearbox in and out, plus likely to need a new clutch, plus over a £1000 for the rebuild on the transfer and gearbox.... Oo err,
Might be a tad too expensive for me!

Well I took a friend out green laning today and we tried down around mullion/lizard way , we found about 5-6 lanes and only a couple were enjoyable and the rest were tarmac'd 😕 fairly disappointed, oh well hopefully when myself and the wife go to North devon at the end of the month that will make up for it 😋

It is a bit tame round that way, worth driving them once anyway. So many of the lanes round here are getting surfaced now, as more and more houses are built beside them

I think you will like North Devon more, I will pm yu some suggestions!

Yes, Mr Turboman has given me the number for John Pollard. Ive just found a good seconhand gearbox on ebay which is in the same town as a friend of mine who is a landy lover so he may be able to get it for me and I can fit it when I am next home.
