Defender 110 no drive unless difflocked

Hi there, a bit of urgent help needed! The other day I was driving my 2001 defender TD5 doing about 25-30mph when the most awful noise occured, similar to the world ending I guess. Turns out the front prop shaft had failed at the uj by the transfer box. Today I removed the prop shaft via the 4 bolts assuming I could then drive it in 2 wheel drive via the back wheels. No, it's not having it. Put the transfer box in high and low and just what was the front prop is spinning. I can go up and down the gears in high and low with the clutch and there are no untoward noises. The only way it will move is if I put it into difflock but I understand you can't drive normally with it on. Does anyone know what is up here? Any helpful hints are gratefully received!

With the front prop disconnected you can drive it in 2WD with difflock on. Avoid wide throttle openings and burning people off from the lights and you'll be ok.

Careful on the corners, it'll be a little more tail happy than it used to be. Best to get another prop on the front as soon as you can, or repair the old one if it's not to fooked ;)
 
Drive like electricity and water takes the path of least resistance. in you case it's to the front output shaft of the transferbox where the because there is no longer any resistance from the front axle will happily spin forever. Locking the Diff splits the drive equally between fron and rear output shafts and forces them both to turn at the same speed..
 
Ok cool thanks for the advice I've got to drove it 20 or so miles to get it to the guy who's going to have a closer look. Hope it'll be ok.
 
Great thanks. Can I maintain normal speeds or do I need to crawl to my destination? What is the risk of me doing further damage even if I take it easy?

yes if normal speeds don't include racing chavs from the lights or taking roundabouts at 60mph

Are you gonna keep asking until someone tells you it's bad for the car or just settle for the advice you've had so far???

why do you bother asking?
you have been given the advice, but you still dont sound convinced and you are going to take you to the guy to "have a closer look"?

closer look at what?!?!? the foked UJ?
 
run in difflock its perfectly fine Have driven many hundreds of miles just don't be abused the throttle or snatch the clutch just drive steadily speed is not important stamping the throttle lifting wheels and too much torque will hurt but its possible to drive normally for many hundruds of miles if needs must.
 
The only reason diff lock should not be used on road is because you can wind the diff up? But as you are only running the rear diff it will make no odds at all you can give it eggs and beans of the lights if you want? But you may damage the half shafts as all the power will be going through them? I would personally enjoy the 20 mile ride with the back end out round the bends but that's just me
