Not sure if this is the right place to ask but if you are changing wheels say 16 to 17" wheels is this going to effect the speedo

It a useful question to ask on this thread. ;)
The answer is, it depends.
With the standard 215/65/16 tyres, the FL1 speedo will show about 10% faster than the actual speed. This was done to eliminate under reading with all available wheels.
The 16" size wheel with 215/65/17 tyre is 27" in diameter.
The 17" size wheel with the standard 225/55/17 tyre is 26.75" in diameter.
So you can see that the speedo will become more inaccurate on the standard 17" rim/ tyre combo to the tune of 12% over read.

I am currently using a 225/60/17 AT tyre on my Trek rims. This gives a diameter of 27.6". The speedo is more accurate with this size at about 6% over read.

So basically there's no need to worry about the speedo, unless very large tyres are fitted.

Is there 2 different size wheel nut sizes? My original nuts don't fit my new spacers

There are 2 types of wheel nut used on the Freelander. The steel wheel nut is a short open nut and the alloy wheel nut is a taller and fully enclosed nut.

A little update on this thread too.

This is the 18" Sport rim.

This is how they look when fitted with 235/55/18 tyres. There's still about 5mm clearance between the strut and tyre. The FL1 is a standard hight SE facelift.

I think the 18" sport rims are the best looking option on the FL. Although, I do like those Vortex ones. I have seen one or two cars with them on but assumed they were FL2 wheels fitted. I didn't realise that style was on option on the FL1.

I'm happy with my Evolotions though. Considering how ****e three spoke alloys looked in the Max Power days I think the Evolutions have stood the test of time.

My threads on my spacers are too wide to put my nuts on

Do you mean the nuts don't go on the spacers you have?
If that's the case, then I suspect you have the wrong spacers. All FL1 studs are 12 X 1.5mm threads. Later LRs have 14 X 1.5mm threads.

Vortex 17 inch with 225 / 65 17 GO15 Yokohama tyres.

Speedo is pretty much spot on. Reads about 1 mph low at 70mph.

I have a 56 plate FL1 Sport td4 with 18 inch alloys and was wondering if I could put a smaller fl1 set of rims on it so I can get AT tyres as am struggling to find any to fit my current rims? Any help would be good.

Any smaller FL1 rims will fit, but a Sport isn't really suitable for off road, if that's what you want to do. The suspension is too low and too stiff, which makes it less than ideal.

Best bet is to sell the premium priced Sport, and buy a cheaper non Sport model. ;)

However there are some decent tyres available for the 18's, if you're not planning on going off road.

Great thread this.
Can anyone see why I can’t fit 235/55 R17’s to the BBS Vortex rims?

The diameter is less than 1% bigger than current 215/65 R16’s abs my research on here suggests a 235 will not foul the spring cup. However is 235mm too big for the 7j rim?

Depends on what you are trying to achieve?
I think 55% tyres look too small in the arches, as the proportions are all wrong in my opinion.
I think 225 60 or 65 R17 look more in proportion I the arches. These sizes also make the speedometer more accurate, and allows for more AT orientated tyres, like the Yokohama Geolander AT 015, which are about the best available all round tyre at the moment.

I’m just trying to achieve a better look and maintain a smooth ride. I agree the cars look better when the arches are filled although a 65 profile is a bit too much sidewall for my liking.

andyfreelander’s 65’s on the Vortex look good though I have to say. I’ll have to do more pondering

However could you advise on whether 235’s will fit on a 7j rim? Some websites say no, others say they will???
