What's the point of the snorkel?

Apart from the fact that they come in very handy when half the countries roads end up closed due to a foot of water, what are the benefits of having a snorkel?

From as far as I can work out:
-You can drive through deeper water
-The engine can breathe better in dusty/ desert conditions
-You feel like you're ray mears

Are there any other reasons to have a snorkel?

(Asked because I want one to make my disco look better, but can't justify the cost unless somebody comes up with a real reason lol).

With a snorkel it's easier to choke the engine if your diesel goes runaway

because it looks good and gives the impression of you no what your doing. AS from said sentence the wife will let you buy it as everyone one else wants one

You have summed it up already

Dont have one fitted to me 110 as air intake up so high anyways (ex mod) I would need a mask and snorkel myself if I waded it that deep.
If ya want one get one, shop around they vary in price a lot, but can look the biz if thats what ya want

Most snorkels don't make anything look better, in fact they can make you look a proper tw4t when you lift the bonnet and 'real' Landy people see that it ain't connected ..

Actually some snorkels can make some things look interesting, if not actually better ...

Mines at the back so you cant even see it. Just behind the passengers head

If I pull water in through that ive got problems ..

If you have the scoop intake facing forward, you can improve efficiency by forcing more air into the engine....

....and then lose it all again because of the increased drag!

Yes and snake oil improves efficiency too if you rub it on the steering wheel.

this is general landy chat not anything goes - less with the bull s#@t

Incidentally they look crap on d3's but sadly I still fitted one for drivig across the sahara. If I can get a new wing I'll remove it again now
