It sounds like the solenoid contacts. Quite common. Around £16 and easy to fit.

18" rims are too big for off roading IMHO as you have to fit lower profile tyres which makes them more likely to be physically damaged and makes lowering tyre pressures for sand etc a nonstarter. Hence I will be moving to 16" rims and will probably go with 245/75/16 KO2s (no lift).
As for alloy vs steel, I don't do P&P and alloy should be fine for Green Laning, but in any case I carry a spare wheel and in the UK you're never too far from a suitable workshop who can unbuckle and repair alloys. Same is true for most of Europe, which is about as far as I plan to take mine. For serious remote overlanding there is this theory that steel is better as they can be welded and bashed back into shape anywhere in the world, whereas welding alloys is highly specialist and if an alloy breaks you could get left stranded. Andrew St Pierre White (lifetime of experience remote overlanding) addressed this on youtube and he concluded that whilst a reasonable theory, he had never actually heard of this happening to anyone with decent 4x4 alloys and that the risk was more than offset by the additional weight (he does carry two spare wheels though).
Genuine LR alloys are pretty tough and outside a serious off road course or a Clarkson right foot, you would have to work pretty hard to break one.
 
My D2TD5 has a 2" lift kit, and I currently use 265/70 R16 tyres.

Noted on the alloy durability; good to know. The problem is that they're easily scuffed and damaged - my current set should be good for a couple of years, easy. At that time, I may well change everything, the rims and the tyres, hence the question. We'll see, anyhow. Cheers for the comment. :)
 
Just dropped it off at the garage on the way to work to have its oil pump bolt replaced and the filters changed.
Any bets on whether the current bolt is perfectly fine or if I'm lucky I managed to get the car to the garage before it came out. :rolleyes:
 
Just been to collect the car and the oil pump bolt was perfectly fine, although they have removed it and fitted a new one with the added protection of some thread lock!

So, was it a waste of money? Nope, not at all because I now know for a fact that the bolt is OK, rather than just hoping it is. :D

Washed it and waxed it ready for tomorrow and made myself a tablet holder for live GPS OS maps :D
At least with it being waxed the crap shouldn't stick quite so well:p rain-exed the windscreen anorl just for good measure
 
I've got OS on my phone, but if I'm using topo maps, I always carry paper backups (old habit). Is the CB a constant fitting in your Disco? If so, do you have skylights, and if so, manual or electrical? If manual, and you've sealed it up permanently, you can fit a smallish two-way box in the space near the winder control panel :)

I've got the paper ones as well as sat nav with the start of the lanes memorised but it's handy to have the pointer as well cos I'll be driver and navigator. CB is a non permanent thing so it's not hard wired and fortunately I don't have any sunroofs ;)
 
Wel,Monday got it stuck on a dirt road up on a mountain in France and blew an air spring.
Tuesday I got towed out and fitted flinstone springs (wooden blocks) to get of the mountain
Next days,wait for spares to be delivered....
