Did an oil chance on my D2TD5, to find that the diesel filter supplied was the wrong one. Oops. Craddocks are getting a call when I get back from France. Then I found that the oil filter (the normal one, not the centrifugal one) was stuck on so tight by the garage who serviced is last, that I couldn't get the damn thing off. SO, they're also getting a call when I get back from France. The only things that went right in the oil change were the oil change, the air filter change, and the centrifugal filter change.
Also, I tried using a suction oil extractor for this oil change; previous oil/filter changes have been highly messy. I can recommend highly the Draper 77057 Manual and Pneumatic Oil Extractor. Amazing bit of kit. With warm oil, and a fair amount of pumping, this tool hauled out eight or so litres of oil (OK, it was a leeeeetle overfilled) with little trouble at all (just a fair amount of pumping, was all). No mess, no fuss, job done. I'm impressed.
Oy.
Go easy on the garage about the oil filter. I did 3 services on my D2 Td5 while I owned it, never overtightened an oil filter and they were always right bastards to get off. My defender was the same. They're that close to the turbo and head they just get heat cycled to buggery. In my experience, it's just a td5 thing!
I know they get tight, but this one is like it's been welded in place; that's never happened when I or a mate have done filter can changes on either my old Siii 109", or the current D2TD5. Hell, I couldn't even get it to shift with locking can grips (like a mole grip for oil filters). It got to the point where I was concerned that the filter outer body would part company from the ring, and that, as they say, would have been that. With two days to go before I take the wagon over to France for a week, it's not a risk I was willing to make.
Was like that on my defender. Ended up hammering a screwdriver thru it and bastardising it off. Defo a job for a quiet weekend then
One thing I like with the Land Rover genuine filter is that you can use this type of spanner which makes it easier.
