Handy for getting long planks in.In all my years of P38 ownership it has never crossed my mind to open the bottom part of the tailgate and THEN close the TOP?! Is that a thing? I just cringe at the thought that someone might try to lift the bottom and smash the top or even someone leaning back against the top hatch. Doesnt the top hatch need the bottom to align correctly as a backstop? It looks well aligned for the photo though..
Admittedly, it does look kinda cool to me. Am I a bad p38 owner for not knowing about this trick? Im gonna try it out next time..

Haha!
Truth is, when you get so far into the woods and up the mountain, you're on your own. No one will come to save you and you couldn't call them if you wanted to anyway. Self-Recovery only.
Besides, a little risk makes the adventure worthwhile.

So far, (knocking on wood) shes always brought me home and weve done a LOT of off-roading together.. But, now having over 185k miles on her.. I definitely pay much closer attention to the pre-trip vehicle checks and I also try to carry alot of spares.
And just for the record! Weve rescued our fair share of vehicles along the way, many of them being Toyotas.

You can do it..
I was at a Horse race with her admittedly i arrived later than i should of, amongst many 4x4's infront of me and i couldn't see the track..
The reason you close the top is to stand on the lower tailgate to get a better view, above the peasants, doncha know
A nice chap with a RRC was doing the same thing

There was a company advertising the crank snapper conversionThe "in P38 circles" famous P38 that was converted to a 2.7 TDv6.
Engine looks like it was made to go in there!
Superb conversion..
About eight grand if I remember rightly, hope they also swapped out the HP22 gearbox.
At least one person has dropped the M57 lump into the P38, a much easier conversion and a more durable engine.
