Picked this up today! thanks to my mate pete (pocketrocket) for help collecting it

my plan is a full restoration - not going for immaculate or original (purists please dont moan) - i want a tidy land rover that i can use for what it was designed for

We are planning an Alps trip for 2015 the plan is to have it on the road asap but finished before the trip ........... but at the moment it is a 6 cyl petrol thats been stood for 20 years and needs a bit of tlc but on the plus side seems very straight and unmolested

we got it back and 1st noticed the clutch was none existent so ive ordered a new master and slave cylinder, we had a quick go at starting it, got it sparking and turning over but no petrol in. so once were satisfied theres no leaks we'll try fresh petrol and see what happens

Looks like you live in a rough part of town with those bullet holes on your mates Disco.

You don't see very many 6 cylinders so it would be cool if you retained the motor. I am guessing parts may be a bit harder to source and they do about 1 to the gallon apparently. But they sound nice

I'm sure there was some european bloke on here who rebuilt a 6 cyl. Maybe do a search.

Good luck, don't let the i grind you down when you think you've got it sorted then something else breaks/leaks/whines/grinds or clunks! Mine did all that but never let me down unlike my rangey did (for all its leather seats and carpets!).

yeah bullet holes are standard where pete lives.....

me and pete did a bit more on it tonight stripped the fuel pump and got that working - was just siezed full with old gone off petrol - smelt a bit odd we wernt sure if it was because it was 20 yrs old or is that what 4 star used to smell like

i will get it MOT'd with the 6 cylinder but i dont think it's fesable to keep it with the poor mpg for a start i would like a 300tdi in there to make it more usable.

I run a 1979 6 pot pickup, no overdrive, standard tyres, standard box etc and it returns 17mpg most days. The worst I've had was last winter with lots of short journeys where the engine never really got up to temperature and using 4wd a lot, gave me 11mpg, that's pretty exceptional though, 95% of the time it's 16-18mpg.

Keep the 6 pot!

is that a one ton? Werent they fitted with the 6 pot?

Mine's not a one ton, just the standard 3/4 ton 109", but yeah some of the one tons were fitted with a six pot.

yeah can't be doing with 18mpg! ive got a 6 pot transit that does that.

hopefully my clutch cylinders should turn up tomorrow - the master cyl looks a dead easy swap but apparantly the slave cyl is a bit fiddly

If you switch the cylinder for a 300 keep the 6, as they are worth a bit of money, don't scrape it

If you're goung to swap be aware the the engine mounts need cutting off and moving forwards on the chassis to keep the gearbox in place and bulkhead differences mean a tdi will still sit very close to it. The gearbox will need changing as the bellhousing is a different diameter.

i wouldn't scrap it i'd flog it let someone else make use of it

ive now got a straight roof for it.

the roof i bought has got 2 sides for a 2 door so they are no use to me they have windows in if anyone is interested in it let me know before i scrap them (seems a shame) i would post them in the for sale section but i dont have enough posts yet.

unfortunately we've not had time to get it started yet ....... or do the clutch

no real progress to report other than she is home (cheers Pete once again) managed to take a few photos

i'm assuming the plate on the rear door at one time had a spare bracket there? seems odd, just it looks a little low like the tyre would foul the tow hitch is that right?

yeah thats it! sams is right you can see the pic with it on and you'd be able to hitch a trailer up. ive seen another like mine but i cant find the pic now - just wondered why its so low ??

That looks a lot bigger than my bracket on yours. Could it be a repair panel someones put on (i.e. just rivetted a sheet of ally to the back door to cover a hole or something)?
