Ok so today I fitted some new side steps, mainly to allow the kids to get in and out!

I had rock sliders on before and they were in pretty poor condition so I thought I'd take them off to have a look. All in all it was a pretty easy job, but one thing I didn't realise for some reason (well mainly as I'm a bit of a newb to all this) is they the standard sills have been removed to fit the rock sliders, assuming it's because they are jackable jobbies.

Would it be easier to simply clean them up with a grinder / sanding disc and get them galvanised and stick them back on? (Any idea how much it would cost to galv them in Beds / Bucks)

Or would it be cheaper / easier to buy new sills and fit them? I assume the sills need painting!?

Although I do have black chequer plate and obviously the new steps are silver, could I whip the black chequer plate of get that galvanised too.....would that look like the side steps chequer plate in silver?

Galvanising itself is cheap enough and as you are in Beds / Bucks you have somewhere quite close up the A1 at Sawtry.
Forget the chequer-plate, it is alloy and can't be galvanised (you could have it painted or anodised though).

I am a great believer in galvanising and in recent years have had many parts on my 90 done (capping, swing-away carrier, tailgate liner, bumper, rear bumperettes etc).
Last year I did a partial rebuild and decided to get more parts galvanised. Bulkhead, side-bars, battery-box, sill-rails and a whole host of other (smaller) parts & brackets. Cost including all prep-work, collection & delivery from home plus VAT was £142 which has to be a bargain.

I spoke to them a few weeks ago as I have some other parts that I want done and they said that they now have a minimum charge of £100 so I am going to wait a few months (until I can do without the vehicle for a couple of weeks) and then send another job-lot up there.

 
Thanks, great reply. So basically due to the minimum value the sliders would cost 100 squid for the galvanising. Have you ever compared the cost of powder coating in silver?
 
Personally I have powder coated jack able sill and which bumper as soon as there is any damage or break in powder coating water gets in and Rust and come off in no time when the sun is out I'm going to look into galvanising

Galv is the bollacks, I love it total maintenance free does look tired after a couple of years, but then stays that way for ever, you can also abuse it something rotten and it still looks okay.
Powder coat and plastic coat all look very nice for a while but then they always start to lift as the rust gets in.
I asked the guy I got my rock sliders from to get them galved for me, I think they were 110.00 all in, Island 4x4
Our local galv place is minimum 90 quid charge.
 
Why not just buy good quality rock or rock and tree sliders which are galvanised at the manufacturing factory? Such as those made by Safari Equip in Bradford?

Powder coating does not stick as well to galv as it does to mild steel. However if powder coating is damaged on galved R + T sliders rust will not push the powder coating off.

R + T sliders earn their keep in supermarket car parks as well as shrugging off trees and rocks.

Agreed it wouldn't be cost effective just to have the rock-sliders galvanised but if you wanted to stick with them then the sensible thing to do would be to have every component you could find galvanised, chances are it would still only cost £100.
When you start looking at your vehicle you will be surprised just how much steelwork can be removed very easily (ok, the vehicle might not be drivable while the work is being done).

I wanted to get a load of bits done on my project, but in the end I decided I didn't have a clue and didn't even know where to bloody start :(

he he he, yea its very handy to work at a galvanisers.
ive got loads done on my truck. usual bits, body cappings tub strengthners etc.
as long as you ask the right gaffer, and dont take the **** i can get most things done for nowt, take em in run em through the galv bath to strip paint off first then into acid then dipped.

we get richards chassis in from time to time, dip em 6 at a time, also get private projects in, had s3 in before christmas, looked pretty grotty but turned out nice.
got some pics on me phone, as anything interesting comes in i take a pic as its usually me that jigs em up, if anyone is interested ill stick em up.

Ah, I didn't realise you worked at a galvanisers :eek:
Is it easy for joe public to just take their bits in? I didn't do it last time because I was worried about how to go about it.
I can feel another project coming on with as many galv bits a possible :eek::D

R/T sliders, front and rear bumper, and NAS hitch all need refreshing on mine, been told there's a sandblasters and powder coaters right next door to each other in Horbury. But want to get the lot galved before coating - don't spose anyone knows a galv place round that neck of the woods? Want to do my cross members too, but just galv for those. Could always take it all to Bradford but be a pain tbh.
 
sorry for hijack but slightly related....

anyone experianced those 75 quid rock or 125 quid rock/tree sliders off ebay ?

the red oxide ones.... i could get em dipped - or just spray em up in the same **** my chassis and winch bumper are done in .....
