Done mine today on my 300tdi after reading this thread. It was full of water! the diesel was floating on the water about 2mm from the top. When I was going down hills off road it must have been dragging in loads of water. It was also full of rust residue. About 4mm in the bottom of the sedimentor. Orangy stuff.
Had a go at the plastic drain plug, tried my luck...... snapped it:D Thought I'd got it but was shearing the plastic.
So undid the 11mm bolt, took me 10 mins start to finish. Engine pulls much better, it's eliminated flatspots. Thought I had a problem with my injectors after hydrolock and changing a rod but it must have been pulling water out of the sedimentor. Nice free and easy fix, cheers:cool: :D

What did you do just empty it out and refill it with diesel ??

Nope, just emptied it. Didn't have any deisel to hand to refil it. just replaced it, started it up... revved it and restarted it a few times until it bled itself then took it for a run. It was much better, throttle response and pick up.

I just had a look at mine its completely covered in mud so I'm going to wire brush it. Is the 11mm bolt on the top or the side ??

I snapped my drain plug handle today! Then chickened out taking the whole thing off. I will have another go now that I have read most of the posts here, thanks!

Been looking at doing this for a while cos my 300tdi will not rev past 3,250rpm, it still drives fine though, I got the new seals for the inside and everything

Everytime I start I fanny about, get scared about snapping the little plastic drain bolt (PLASTIC?? I mean, WHY??) then Haynes says about removing the fuel line in to the sedimentor and lifting it above the tank (There is a boot floor in the way  )

But this thread makes me feel a little better about it. I was going to remove it without disconecting the hose but no idea where the bolt was to undo and was sure I could feel more than one bolt up there.

I have just read Snows thread about replacing his boot floor and that has a cracking pic of the top of the sedimentor.

Here it is, hope this is of help to others:

So which bolt do I undo to remove the sedimentor from the bracket so I can bring it down to take it apart?

Cheers

Its the one in the centre on top of sedimenter. Put a plastic bag over it when you remove it to catch the fuel in.Hold it tight though its very slippy..........

Cheers mate, might have a go tonight if it doesn't start raining..

Top of your head, do you know what size it is?

If not it's alright a bit of fiddling will let me know

It's 11mm and use a ring spanner it works much better.

I use an old ice cream tub to catch the slopped-out diesel when the bowl comes undone.

Sometimes after undoing the central bolt the bowl sticks to the rubber seal. If you find this, give it a tap with a rubber mallet.

DEAD EASY...

I got the seals and tap kit ready in advance

It's on the drivers side, infront of the rear axle and it's just below the boot floor.

Under the car, looking up from the passenger side over where the rear prop shaftmeets the rear diff you will see it on the drivers side

Haynes says to undo the fuel line, and hold it higher than the fuel tank to stop any fuel coming out but seeing as the boot floor is directly above it that might be hard so I left it connected.

In the middle on top of the sedmentor is an 11mm bolt holding it on, get yer ring spanner out as a socket or a ratchet type ring spanner would not fit over the top

Get a suitable container underneath once the bolt is loose, support the sedimentor then finish unscrewing. It may be stuck there cos of all the crap you off road beasts will have covered it in. So give it a tap if needed.

Right, then my camera died, and then my phone so no more pics.

The unit comes out in one piece but it is actually two, so I emptied all the crap, and there IS crap in there (for those who have been lucky enough to experience a blown head gasket imagine that murky scummy crap and then imagine it's thicker more scummy cousin).

Using a rubber mallet I tapped around the middle of it to seperate so I could replace the middle seal.

Up where you took the sedimentor from you will see a plastic cone like object, remove it and you will see a thread coming down with a small o-ring which was keeping that plastic cone in place and the other seal is around the outside part.

I rubbed all the bits down especially around the seal areas and then cleaned with parafin and let dry.

Put the seals in, put the two parts of the bowl together and then offer up and do up the bolt with your fingers to keep it in place then get your spanner back out and tighten back up.

Roberts yer mothers brother.
