Just done the battery replace & update the smart charge using diagnostics on a 2006 BMW 120D. There's plenty of aftermarket diag tools out there that can do it on modern cars. Take 2 mins, and the smart charge system then calibrates to the new battery.

This one says it can do most newer JLR cars, and looks very similar to my BMW tool.
