Rear axle is finished!

Just need to buy a pair of calipers now and some new brake pipe and that axle is sorted.

Right now the interior welding is now finished (well nearly just gotta sort rear crossmember out) im starting to think about how to mount the fuel tank etc.

I am going to be using the standard tank as i dont really want the expense of buying a brand spanker when the money could be put to better use. Along with the standard tank id like to run an external swirl pot and secondary fuel pump. With the fuel lines running down and through the transmission tunnel as theres plenty of room there now due to the body lift. A bit overkill maybe?

Am i right in saying it needs to be anchored to the chassis?

Just trying to get my head round building up a cradle/frame for the tank to be secured to behind the front seats and how i would mount the swirl pot etc.

There will also be a partition between the front seats and the rest of the vehicle.

And then sort out enclosing the whole set up in its own box as a firewall. With maybe access of some kind to repair/replace anything that goes wrong.

Then also had the idea of fitting a fire suppression system too

The tank can no longer put the tank in its rightful place as a winch is going there

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I've used a series (very similar to the defender) tank, doubt you need a swirl pot. ive ran an inline fuel pump and soldered new copper pipes from the old existing 90deg bends.
you can see them in this pic.

I'd be trying to mount the winch behind the tank in stock position.

You need to cut the chassis crossmember out and weld in a winch tray to replace it, then with a custom bumper you're laughing.

Mounting the awkwardly shaped stock tank inside is a no-go IMO, you should either work out a way of mounting them both at the back, or just get a proper fuel cell purchased, the effort/expense now will be appreciated for many years to come and will be worth it.

Benefit of moving the tank forwards is weight distribution but the stock location is ideal for space saving.

Very much doable Noisy, you need to chop rear crossmember, bumper tabs, weld in new bumper tabs on the end of the chassis legs which also acts as a capping to help stop water ingress then a custom bumper on top of that

Tank is definitely being put inside as im not too worried about space saving as there will only be the 2 bucket seats up front. The back will be empty as such. Well storage for recovery gear, spare wheel etc.

I have to agree with you with the fact the standard tank is awkward as feck. And just found this on fleabay

Seems well made and would be far easier to mount.

Whats the plan for filling it up? You gona extwnd the filler tube to the side and mount a new cap? And what about a sender.. that tank doesn't seem to have one

yeah a tank like that would be the best option, promise you mate you'll be glad of it in future

the expression "quality is remembered long after price is forgotten" springs to mind here

seeing as you are going with v8 power i would recommend two of those tanks, i tend to get through about 25 gallon on a two day laning weekend, covering around 300 road miles.

if you can move the weight forward to just behind the rear seats, as far inboard and low as possible, that would be ideal.

fuel capacity obviously depends on your usage though, pnp guys need to only carry 10 gallon max.

For filling up just open the back door i guess and reach in. Not sure will work that out at some point also i believe they can add the sender to the tank for and extra 35 notes.

Like the idea of 2 tanks side by side but will mainly be a p n p toy so not too worried about that will see how it goes! Ideally id stick 2 in though.

As for a far forward as possible is the plan there will be a partition to keep the front and back separate but id like to mount it directly behind that.

If you wanted to be smart I'd make up some rock sliders that stretch back to the chassis and have them as the fuel tanks guy in Oz has done that on his RRC

Good thing with that is nice low tanks for CoG, and with body lift youd get good capacity.
