are any of the cheap OBD scanners or phone software OBD/EOBD readers able to read the engine data?

Only very basic stuff like rpm but unlike dedicated it won't tell you where its coming from .

You need a nano or similar to see what's going on with temp readings etc

ok, update, just been out to double check what I have fitted where

above FIP is a blue sensor

middle is brown

furthest from FIP is black (post 99 with A/C)

Change the brown one for the correct green one. Brown only has one pin. ECU temp sensor needs it's pins connected to pins 35 and 53 on the ECU. Pin 1 on sensor goes to pin 53 on ECU. Pin 2 on sensor goes to pin 35 on ECU via fuel temp sensor. No wonder the bloody thing is struggling.

Depending how they are constructed they can have different ranges of operation. This is matched to the unit receiving the signals.
