2000 Reg 2.5 Diesel

when it's cold (recent temperatures) the Rangie is a b*tch to start! I have changed the plugs and have not noticed any difference, I’ve also recently replaced the lift pump as this died a month or so ago, I did have a small leak on the fuel return pipe this was allowing air in overnight, but have since cured this.

So what happens….
it spins over fine then kind of catches a lumpy 450 – 500rpm then cuts out, this is sometimes cured with a shot of easy start, if this doesn’t work by this point the battery has usually given up and I’m needing a jump start from my girlfriends BMW

at first I thought it was my home made fuel being too thick, so I have adjusted the viscosity and no improvement, I have reverted back to pump diesel and still no change.

Am I missing something here it starts revs to around. 500rpm then cuts out

And you two thinks its the glow system

Interesting :D

Would you notice anything once started if this was the case? as once started it runs fine
Sorry I thought you were a veg user, you say home made fuel at the start. Veg waxes at relatively high temperatures so if you were running it it could clog the FIP and injectors until warm but I'm sure you know that.
If it starts at all, as Grit said, it will not be glowplugs.

it doesn't start straight away it cranks and cranks then eventually catches but dies almost straight away

I get that bit but once its fired you can't turn back time
Ie the glows have done there part

So lack of fuel or air in the system check that clear pipe for bubbles while someone starts it

I had that after I left her a week at Manc airport. I find in the cold and after standing a small amount of gas, just enough to get through the deadzone and maybe put the revs at 1,200rpm. She starts happily that way. Although I recognise that the owners manual recommends applying no throttle at all it seems to do the trick nicely.

If it starts at all, as Grit said, it will not be glowplugs.

Not true, when I had 3 complete dead and 2 dicky glowplugs she'd start of cranked for long enough, in deep winter it would always require a booster pack adding, changing the glowplugs made the world of difference.

You didn't opt for one if those cheapy intanks pumps did you could be not pre delivering
The fuel best check the 180mm check

Due to the fuel I am using the clear pipe is no longer clear :(

You have just said it started if cranked long enough even with duff plugs:confused: so how is what I said not true:confused::confused:
Of course you stand a much better chance of a quick start with a full set of working glowplugs but the fact remains that if it starts on 3 it will usually keep running until the others chime in.

Yea mine don't :-(

so, lets say I check my plugs later and they are all getting 12v and we assume they are also working.

FIP issues, please tell me more

Johnny if the car started in first place and dies its not going to be the glows is it

Air or fuel!
Diesel also needs heat - just because it fires doesn't mean there is enough latent heat in the block to keep up detonation....the glows remain warm for a short while after starting which helps until the engine can self sustain....

Hence why with a Diesel it is usualy best to drive straight away to maximise heat in the engine and not let the turbo idle for too long

Just because your getting voltage don't mean the plugs are working this as data and I have said more working plugs faster start but once running nothing to do with plugs.

I think 500rpm is a little more than just fired if only for a split second .

Thanks, I already knew that, and was suspicious of the plugs or mainly the relay as recently replaced plugs (NGK) but was wanting more info from Data regards FIP being lacquered. I have used Veg oil in the past I had covered 40k miles on the stuff, never had an issue. Then I flushed the system with Dino juice and switched to a home made fuel, the fuel can be mixed with either dino diesel WVO or SVO, but I have heard of lacquering when mixed with SVO maybe was still some SVO in the system or at least enough to cause this issue?? Once plugs have been ruled out?
