They should at least show the level as part of the start up process, no reason they can't. Just about every time i get in the car i forget to check, then it's too late.
I can't see any reason not to have a real dip stick

Eliminating the dipstick saves a few pennies and the marketing men love a new gimmick like electronic oil level checks. Just one more bit of unnecessary unreliable electronics that could cost you an engine when it goes wrong. One of my Citroens had an oil level check when starting but it still had the dipstick.
