Hi all.Im sure this has been encountered before but I couldnt find any information on this super site that exactly matched whats going on.I fitted a kenlowe fan to my dhse and all seems fine no overheating [according to the guage] however the ac fans seem to be running alot. has anyone seen this as i dont want to hurt the motor just for the quiet luxury of no viscus. any words greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Thank you for your reply but the reason for my head scratching is the system was fine thermostat, radiator, water pump coolant all new and the kenlowe just went on yesterday the ac fans are only now coming on even before the kenlowe and the guage isnt anywher near overheating its just awhisker on the blue side of twelve o clock.

No need for the Kenlowe, I use the aircon fans for cooling and they are more than adequate.
I suspect the problem is something you have done wiring in the Kenlowe.
However, if you are running the aircon, the reduced airflow when the Kenlowe is off will affect the cooling of the aircon condensor raising the gas temperature to a point where the aircon fans come on, try with the aircon switched off.

On the petrols, personally i would not use just the aircon fans for cooling. The petrols need all the air flow they can get. In normal operation the aircon fans are switched by pressure not by temperature. However on petrol engines and later diesels (after 1999) they are used to aid cooling under certain conditions and are activated by engine temperature. The Kenlow should not be wired into any part of the aircon system. If it is, as Keith says, that could cause a problem. Make sure the Kenlow is wired properly, if it is then you have a problem with the aircon.

Well chaps, thanks for taking the time to consider the issue and post ideas, the kenlowe is wired to the battery positive and the earth is to the chassis the wee thermometer is in the rad fins with the orange and blue going from the thermo switch to the fan unit, is this wrong? If the kenlowe is switched to come on really early ie its first and second stages it beats the ac fans as to who starts first, any higher on the kenlowe and the ac fans are on first. the ac is not turrned on oh and the ac belt is not on. Could the lack of an ac belt be this cause? The ac fans are a emeregency fan on these cars im informed but the hoses dont feel ridiculasly hot and the fans are coming on. im checking the engine with a digital thermometer tomorrow so i can know what exact temo she is running at as the guage seems happy. Any p38 experts care to share an opinion ill be very grateful. Thanks

The sensor for this function is the black one on head towards scuttle around cylinder 5 inlet. Should i believe come in around 105 degrees. There is either something wrong with that or with the gauge sender and the actual engine temp is a lot higher than indicated. Gauge sender is first one on head near injection pump. Should be blue on your car.

Cheers for that mate, ill check temp in the morning with the digital compared to the gauge and have a geez at those sensors. Ill report findings. Thanks

If the coolant temperature is normal, pull the connector from the black sensor by cylinder 5 and see if it stops the problem. If it does, replace the sensor.

Hi there, I checked the car a few times today with the digital and she's running perfectly temp wise. With the ac fans disconnected at their sensor the kenlowe was cutting in and out nicely. The temp around where that overheat black sensor is never went over 97 so I'll change that sensor. Thanks for the advice. Cheers

Hi threre when i checked the temp was fine with the digital never above 95 at the hottest spot [where that sensor is] and average around 88-94 every wher else around the motor hoses and rad. The kenlowe is cutting in and out fine so ill replace that overheat sensor. Thanks for the wise words

Hi all i thought i posted areply on this re the fans but it didnt go up sorry. the temp is fine stat opens at bang on eighty and the hoses and rad are in the eighties the hottest spot is exactly where the black sensor is and is in the late ninetys so were all good. The kenlowe is cutting in and out fine now so ill change the black sensor. Thanks for the words of wisdom guys
