I wonder if you guys have any ideas!! I have had my 110 landy for a couple of months, and have never worked on one before. I have managed with the help of an awesome 4x4 breaker yard and a mate, to change the dud engine to a 200tdi, changed the clutch, done the conversions for the engine - was running like a dream - and then yesterday it began overpressurizing on the water filler cap - has so far blown 2 hoses, and I had a three hour limp home from Oxford to Swindon, stopping every couple of miles to cool down - both of us!!! I have removed the radiator stat, checked the flow from the water pump, engine is running cooler, but still overpressurizing. We have been told over the phone that it is the head gasket???

Yeah sounds like the head gasket has blown. :(

Luckily, on a Tdi it is a very simple job to complete and can easily be managed by the most amateur of home mechanics.

I am halfway through a head gasket change on my 300 Tdi right now, allow about 7-8 hours in total and £100 including having the head skimmed (if it needs it).

All you'll need is a set of sockets/spanners and a torque wrench. ;)

found ya, sos guys landything an laveryrach are dealing with the same motor, but still really need your help, check my latest cos I need answers xx

As far as ah can see, ye've already had yer answer.... head gasket!
And just 'cos ye're female, doesn't give ye the right tae demand an answer!!

Before you start jumping in at the deep end taking the head off, try the most obvious thing first and check for any blockages in your coolant lines after the water pump. I had the same problem with my old 12J (2.5 N/A diesel). The thermostat was stuck open and had gummed up with big clumps of rusty ****e that had collected in the cylinder block. Flush the system through with a hose pipe until the water runs clear and check that the radiator is flowing properly too. The water pump will pump regardless of whether or not there is a blockage in front of it (they don't start to free run when pressure is built), and the water that it can draw in from the radiator and the header tank is more than enough to create a lot of pressure if the waterway is blocked ahead.

A simple check for the head gasket, would be to leave the expansion / header tank cap off, start the engine and take a look to see whether or not the coolant bubbles / fizzes. Are there any sings of oil contamination in the coolant? Have you noticed a loss in power or is there lots of white smoke bellowing from the exhaust?

hi all, thank you for all that, i've change the head and gasket going well all back together but but now will not start, checked fuel is getting to injectors, and tapits all looks and moves ok, anything? many thanks lee

Did it get very hot-Rings can stick.

The best way to get air out of system is loosen off injector pipe nuts-get assistant to crank and as fuel spurts out-tighten each injector

Had a look at my water for bubbles and didn't see much, however it has used the whole expansion tanks worth of water since I first posted...!?

When I did my fuel filter it took loads of cranking to get the fuel to bleed! Diff engine but might be the same??

thanks for that, i think its going to be a very hammer next :( i've now f**k the battery :( Walked away yesterday but i am going back to her today :) :) lee

If you are sure it is all good

A sniff of easy start should get stuck rings free and it running-stubborn ones like mondeo's we used to ignition on and tow up road and drop clutch in 3rd.
