hi, im currently doing a dissertation for my university course and my topic includes off roading, access rights, environmental damage etc...

I was hoping that some of you could put your views and opinions on here as well as any experiences youve had, good or bad so that I can get a better understanding of what actually happens.

much appreciated!
:D

or your a bobble head and your going to tar us all as knobs that wreck theearth with our big knobbly tyres

I didnt think of it that way but I can assure you im not :)

you dont have to give personal details just experiences youve had...eg, if youve ever encountered locals who go mental on you even thought youre on a legal road?

Farmers blocking right of way and locals too just because it runs past there house to name a few,
We have all kinds of problems and some laners give the rest a bad name

Once had a mad old lady chase a groupe of us down a lane with a pitch fork, and yes the lane was, and still is, a legal byway and we had every right to be driving down there

Ramblers have very clear views on off roaders and ive seen quite a few documentaries which shock me to be honest but I cant seem to find much information on the off roaders side of things... where better to look than at the heart of it, the users!

Is it easy to find which lanes are legal and which are not?

Oh yes, just remembered. When we were in Wales in January, some guy had put a 'Road Closed Ahead' sign at the top of his road, he admitted to putting it there himself, and then got really ****ty with us for going down there to access the lane

I haven't had any problems.

I have a lane runs parallel to my woods that turns into a footpath. Met a guy stuck down the footpath and churning it up. I pointed out a quite clear sign saying end of lane and footpath only ahead.

He then proceeded to attempt to turn round on the spot and managed to back into my gate even though I offered to open it. He then proceeded to turn round and try to "brush through" opposite hedge and got stuck in the ditch and rev bollocks off it.

He asked for a tow! I agreed once he had repaired ruts in footpath and rehung my gate which was ok. I told him to join a group, do research, learn his vehicle. Said sod off.

Left him in the ditch and went back to work in the woods for 20mins and had a brew before returning to find him head in hands. I pulled him out and didn't even get a thank you.

On the plus side........I did get to laugh at a shogun and his wife destroying him.

There's no substitute for a little brains as far as laning goes. If I get in trouble I use a spade and things to hand

its ok for poeple to walk across farmers fields with there big knobbly hiking boots, but its not ok when its a vehicle going down a public right of way. I did about footpath erosion when i studied environmental science a few years ago. its the same thing. ramblers cause soil erosion where cars cant go up mountain paths and nature walks ect. groups like defra and such like even go as far as restricting access to places where walkers are causing too much footpath erosion, so there just as bad!

there are quite a few that find it comforting and fashionable to hate motor vehicles ,except for using them to get to and from their walks ,those should be ignored ,BOATs can and do get damaged from naive or worse ignorant drivers ,but sustainable use should be maintained as a right ,whether its in a vehicle ,bike or on foot ,sustainability obviously includes only using when conditions are favourable or repairing of spoilt areas ,we used to tear up several as part of farming but they were allways repaired after so as not to hinder other users

The real issue is that too many idiots have been stupid, or irresponsible or disrespectful to lanes and byways - and often the other users and people who live nearby. This has then in turned caused all offroaders (Bikes and 4x4ers) to be all given the stereotype of being the same, when the vast majority are not.

Because 4x4s can and do cause much more damage when used in an irresponsible manner, an unduly amount of attention is paid to it, against the walkers who leave litter, leave gates open, wear away footpaths and damage walls and fences by climbing over them. I've been with people who have been sworn at, spat at, and had stuff thrown at them by walkers and locals - just because they were in a 4x4.

While we still have those in our midst who are happy to go out and tear up lanes for the stake of it, we will always be on the end of a loosing battle. Its becoming easier for authorities to close lanes, to save them on repair costs, and them being churned up in the first place than it is for them to keep them open.

As part of the drive to keep the countryside open for ALL users, we need the facility to weed out those in the community who are spoiling it for all of us, and take action ourselves to make sure lanes are looked after. GLASS and other associations do a good job but it would be even better if we had the ability to help the councils maintain the lanes for all, it would save them money, and give us a better reputation
