its ok for poeple to walk across farmers fields with there big knobbly hiking boots, but its not ok when its a vehicle going down a public right of way. I did about footpath erosion when i studied environmental science a few years ago. its the same thing. ramblers cause soil erosion where cars cant go up mountain paths and nature walks ect. groups like defra and such like even go as far as restricting access to places where walkers are causing too much footpath erosion, so there just as bad!

Heh, you are not helping the cause. Of course they do but what does that mean ? Thats like saying an argument for every household in the UK leaving their tap running is that Severn Trent have so many leaks in their pipes.

We all know a walking boot does less damage than a tyre.. and I dont think some of the key lanes have anywhere near enough walking boots to even show on a chart compared to tyres. Likes of Hadrians Wall however does suffer massively from erosion and hence they are spending a small fortune protecting it.

I agree with EViL on the quality of this poll so stuff it ;)

I would be interested however in any genuine statistics on the amount of time and money 4x4 owners spend helping councils with waymarking, resurfacing etc vs walkers.

I could only guess its a massive amount more.

student87 - Don't forgot driving an open BOAT is not off-roading. It is quite definitely on-roading - the Bobbles deliberately ignore that fact, which of course helps them convince other folks it is wrong. A BOAT is a public highway, albeit one that is quite often not so Mondeo friendly as most public highways, and is open to all users.

The poll needs serious thought.

Does he mean "Should BOATs b amended 2 take in2 account mtr vehicles which were nvr meant 2 usethem" as in they should all be tarmacked, or only certain ones be open to vehicles, or they all need paths by the side of them and crossing signs, or walkers should be banned from walking on a public highway?

It is too ambigious a poll to be able to answer with any decree of meaning.
The first thing you aught to lean is how to word a question.....

It aint a public highway... its a Byway :) as the RAC will be pleased to tell you if you need recovering from one ..

and they are wrong. :(

Section 66(1) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 defines a byway open to all traffic (“BOAT”) as:
“a highway over which the public have a right of way for vehicular and all other kinds of traffic, but which is used by the public mainly for the purpose for which footpaths and bridleways are so used”.

my old clubs pay and play site in my village got shut down by the locals. was bloomin annoyed. they turfed up and basically did a picket line despite the fact we had rented the site and didnt start early or finish late. there was one footpath in the woods but that was always cornered off to keep landys away from it, despite best holes being down there. grrr

Thats nice but the Wildlife and Countryside Act doesnt count for jack when it comes to BOAT from an official definition perspective.

Ohhh Apparently it does (humble pie) .....

You are So Clever :)
