one of the guys up the road has got a 5 door hippo , not that it makes any difference , lol

he knocked on my door and asked about fitting tyres

he asked can he fit off road tyres on the back and normal road tyres on the front

now surely this would screw up the vcu, the AT tyres on the rears would have a slightly different circumference than the fronts

said to him not a good idea and said why don't u fit AT tyres all round

could see his thinking , that having normal road tyres on the front then when the extra traction is required the vcu will come in and offer a better AT tyre on the back

said to him I've got bridgestone dueler's road tyres fitted on mine and have been very good, but if u want it for off road use to fit some AT tyres

did advise him at the end of the day not to do it, but can see him fitting them and will then see metal flying everywhere in the road and containing his ird, vcu and the diff to follow , lol

told him to give me a bit to read through this forum and see what the best AT tyres everyone is fitting and get back to him ,

couldn't believe how many times the tyre question has been asked, have got plenty of reading to do,lol

As you suggest the difference in circumference would eventually screw up the vcu et al. Also the back wheels sort of always drive anyway, so potentially flawed logic. Good recommendation from your self which I agree with, AT all round I say get a gentle pattern for or road use

It's a bit of a logical conundrum.

Yes the off road tyres would be taller but the handbook says a pair of new tyres on the red is ok - and these would be taller so what's the problem?

However I can say from experience that when I got mine the previous owner had done this, and soon there was a horrid whining noise at around 30mph (like gearbox whine). I swapped my wheels out for a set with all matched road tyres and the whining stopped.

I had already changed the Vcu and support bearings so it wasn't those wearing.

I wouldn't do it, even though logically it may make sense something on the hippo doesn't like it at all.

All last year my neighbour ran round with Maxxis 751 mud and snow on rear scorpions on front to no ill effect

If you measure the rolling RESISTANCE of the tyre tread to road surface, the AT tyre will have a different grip set-up. This can be displayed buy putting it in neutral and seeing how long it takes to roll the same straight/smooth distance down a slight hill. This is costly to do but does show GG AT2 having a greater rolling RESISTANCE than pirelli scorpion str. The greater the RESISTANCE the longer it takes to complete the test. It's an interesting coparison at the time yer changing yer tyres.

With pirelli scorpion str I can push ma hippo on level smooth ground. With GG AT2 I couldn't. You can feel the difference in grip when cornering. GGAT2 could go faster round corners. Down side is the ride/noise is orrible.

Hence why we have said for many years: same make/model/size tyres. Whilst some may get away with it... the risk is too great for those who have suffered due to tyres.

erm I saw him this afternoon going past and it sounds considerably nosier than it useto

hope he hasn't gone and fitted them

maybe I should get a shovel ready now , might get some free bits coming my way , lol

oh well why come and ask me in the first place , his problem not mine

know it sounds harsh but if he's stupid enough not to listen that's up to him

when my bridgestone duelers are due to be changed i will put a new set of AT on mine , all 5 of them as no point having an odd spare , lol , so I've got a bit more grip for greenlaning etc

hippo

have u found the gg tyres the best yet for greenlaning yet or do u think u would change them again for something else later on

think we should put a result score up now seeing the amount of times the tyre question has come up, lol

I took my GG AT2 off with little wear as they were horrible. I changed me pic to warn others. Like most I don't need an oft road tyre. It was a big mistake buying them. They're not real oft road tyres. They're road tyres with a chunkier tread pattern. No where near the strength they should be. Wall is about the same as a normal tyre. Hence they split easily. When in Scotland last year I was happily spotting Freelanders. Not one had AT tyres. Each to their own I guess.

talking of tyres i think theres not much left on the front of the wifes maybe 1000 miles do i need the same make when she changes them?

it is better to get the same make , size as the rears and changed as an axle pair

new tyres always on the back

do u know what fitted on the back

plus do u know what the spare is like

personally I've got some bridgestone duelers all round on mine and find them very good in the snow etc , quiet on motorways and very happy with them

but have only had them fitted so don't know how they compare to other tyres

there not an AT tyre so to be honest don't know what there like in the mud etc

will find out at the lz event how good they are, lol

Tyres didn't fail. I cut them to see the thickness. The crack by the ruler was a gg at2. That was a real split. Done oft road so yer can't blame the tyre too much but it does show how weak they are.

big tyre fred:
