OMG it sounds like death. So the engine just seizes up? Wow. That's frightening if on the motorway.

No qualms about checking levels and tyres, that's fine. Coolant level sensor sounds good - are they on eBay or Amazon?

They make up their income by fining folk for the most minor transgressions.

Having said that, the inner boroughs and city (for @JohnM70) are exceptionally clean for a high density metropolitan area.

It doesn't just seize up and you get plenty of advanced warning, as the coolant will start to disappear, long before the HG fails. If the HG does fail, it's not the end of the world. The HG problem can be fixed pretty cheaply and permanently, providing the engine hasn't actually been overheated.

I think you'll find semi-permanently is more accurate. I think that equates to temporarily.

I can fix a K series HG permanently, well for the rest of the engine's life anyway.

AHHH, somehow my notifications were turned off here... just saw this. Picking up the car today. Feel a lot less nervous with your information... haven't driven it in its 4WD state... maybe I should before I finish paying for it... BTW how much do a full set of tyres usually cost in the UK?

Well either that or a catastrophic loss of oil not noticed for a mile when the engine has covered less than 40k miles.

There are various threads giving advice of the best way to replace a K Series head gasket to give the engine its best chance of not needing another for the maximum possible time. There should be a go-to thread in the technical archive - but there isn't. Dunno if this thread covers it...

I just googled "landyzone head gasket liners level" to find that one and there were other offerings. The K Series is a great engine and there are very few problems with it that go through the forum other than HGF

Ooooh, I'm all for that old time religion if it means I avoid HGF, which sounds about as bad as some other acronyms in the news. My car has 68k so maybe it's had it already, sort of like the mumps?

The Hippo has almost landed.

Currently awaiting a check from my mechanic. So far - outside of missing a V5C (??) it is also missing the light surround for its fog lamp

That's a pain. The surrounds are like rocking horse do do in the correct colour, or expensive to buy in primer, then expensive to paint.
Sometimes you can get aftermarket replacements in chrome for about £50 the pair.

In my experience chromed plastic peels off in no time at all, leaving an ugly pitted surface.
