Lots of people have a speedo which is inaccurate due to tyre choices, final drive ratios etc.

If I produced a plug and play device that plugs into the transducer wires and allowed you to change the frequency up or down by various amounts so allowing you to have a totally accurate speedo no matter what you messed with would people be interested in buying one??

I think I could bring it to market for maybe £30 (or £25 inc postage for Landyzone members).

Is it going to sell or should I just make one for myself and forget it.
 
maybe a good idea for newer landies perhaps,
but maybe no good for my old disco 1....
not to be outdone, all us older owner drivers can do a simular thing with this simple, and now cheap plug and play thing..

plugs into the cigar socket or wherever you want, and its gives a true miles per hour readout where ever you are.
cheap as chips on ebay - mine was ;)

I already have an electronics business making and selling photographic equipment so it would be built as part of that and sold on the existing web site albeit with a cut price deal to members on here.

Nope only class 5 have a speedo test, don't need one for a class 4


Fitting a digital one anyway when I can afford it
 
Road Vehicles (Con and Use) Regs 1986

Reg 35(2) (h) permits the use alone of a Tachometer (The Spy in the Cab) instead of a speedo providing it is marked with the Approval Mark and complies with the Community Recording Equipment Regs.(Without going there seem to recall something about the need for one to be calibrated and sealed every couple of years - fairly expensive???)

Until such time as it is fitted then a Speedo is required and which must be maintained in good working Order.

Journeys with a defective speedo are permitted when the defect occurred during the current journey, or as a result of the defect it has ceased to be in good working order and steps have been taken to have the vehicle equipped with all reasonable expedition, by means of repair or replacement, with an instrument which is in good working order. (Reg 36 (2))

Hmmm bit more searching shows that as of 2012 they changed it


The car will fail if a speedometer is not fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken/missing or cannot be illuminated.



So yeah you're right now! In theory then all classic cars should fail seeing as they don't light up :rolleyes:

There's already companies out there with a similar business model catering to other sectors of the market. A case example would be Speedy cables who recalibrate MGB speedos for folk that do engine swaps and fit V8 / C / SD1 etc rear axles with different diff ratios.

Speaking as a fellow self employed person, I think you know in your gut if you're on to a winner or not, eh?

Give it a try and see where you get. Presumably already having contacts in the trade you already know where you'd be sourcing your raw materials from and can probably cost out a unit in terms of materials / labour / packaging and advertising. The only thing you need to work out is how much you value your time in terms of getting the thing to market from the proverbial sketch on the back of a fag packet to finished product.

It goes back to my original point - if it feels like a winner and you've got a track record of your gut feelings being successful then it's worth giving it a shot, eh?

You might want to consider covering your own back on this...
You aught to include something in the bumph about not taking any responsibility for incorrect calibration. There's always going to be a ****er out there that'll try and drag you through small claims court because, for example, they got done by a speed camera and want to lay the blame at you. Just a thought! ;)
