Hi all! - I've recently bought a 2001 defender 90 which we are looking to have some fun with but while doing all the numerous jobs Tombring it up to spec, I keep coming back to this tiny little black push/pull switch on the right hand side of the steering column. Nothing appears to happen when it's operated, well I say that but for all I know I could be applying an electric shock to some poor bugger remotely!

Does anyone have a clue what this is for, it looks like its supposed to be there but I'm total at a loss as to it's purpose!!

Thanks!

LOL, wow, this group really is all things to all men!-)

[Cough, ermm, now back to topic].....As an aside, just took this photo of the offending switch and discovered the new door seals I fitted yesterday actually worked and there were no puddles on the floor of Joe!!

stop pressing that feckin button!!!!! the crocodile clips on my nipples are starting to glow now you b@stard,

ouch!! I SAID STOP YOU SADISTIC GIT!!!!

My guess would be that its an aftermarket switch for an auxillary light of some description, maybe a work light or a beacon, something thats easy to lash up with what you have lying around, but its a weird place to mount it. Can you trace the wire(s) back to anywhere ?

Thanks for the help this far! I've been too scared to try and trace back the wiring as one job will turn into 4 and I've not had the time so far.....another job for the weekend I guess!-)

Although it can do pretty much anything at all, loading lights, roof beacons, ejector seat etc, That type of switch is often used to operate an electrically switched pto.
Although it looks a little different to mine, In the same place I have a hand throttle, give it a pull while your engines running, you'll soon know.

Any news on what the mystery button does yet??
The suspense is killing me.
In fact if you're any where near North Somerset this weekend, I'll trace the bugger for you!:D

Tis worth tracing wires to see if it still does sumut. Had a switch on mine that I didn't know what it did so followed wires, found it turned cooling fan on - in fact as the thermostatic switch had been taken out of circuit was the only thing that turned fan on:eek:
