My VCU help please

If it drove ok before the snow, it could be that the 3 Amigos is not allowing the TC to work on the rear.
It needs this looking at first, search "The Three Amigos" and try the remedies starting with the cheapest first.

It is possible to end up with rear drive only. The fault is in the gearbox final drive carrier resulting in no drive to the LHF driveshaft. The easiest solution is a good second hand gearbox.
 
Il look for the The Three Amigos but since having the car it has always had a occasional knocking coming from the rear when changing gear, however when I drive softly it doesn't make a noise at all, but a mechanic told me that it is fine and it can always make that noise. He said that it drives fine and so long as there is no constant strange noise then I shouldn't worry. When I purchased the car I just assumed that all free landers where rear wheel drive as that's what my brother told me. I now know different.

When I posted this link of the video to you, I knew you would mention my headlight ;) haha
 
Well I'm not doing that, I don't mind driving it two wheel drive. I drive like a granny. I just wanted the lights out so that I can get rid of it haha
 
Kaye - look in the FAQ section - there is a VCU test that you can do easily, - or someone can for you, before you do any major damage.

yu will have to do some homework into how your car works.
 
Kaye it might be expensive(or not) to fix when you find out exactly whats wrong with it.
If you buy parts willy nilly it'll cost a small fortune, the upshot is it can't be fixed on a forum. Get a reliable mechanic to look at it.
 
If ABS-TC lights have only just come on they could just be on cos the sensor reluctor rings are full of snow.
 
Yeh it's probably just me panicking and looking for an excuse to blame my friend haha. I will see if the lights are still on tomorrow. The snow is pretty heavy here at the moment so I will just leave it for a few days and see if they turn off. I will get my mechanic to check it out once the snow has cleared.

If you only have drive to rear wheels there are 2 possible reasons. The most common reason is the spline in the gearbox has sheared so only the one shaft is being driven to the IRD. This requires a new part differential in the gearbox itself, they are approximately £170 for the part,lus the fitting (gearbox out job). The other cause which is very rare(only really ever seen it once), are the small gears inside the IRD which can bee seen through the fill plug has bee worn away/sheared off. This requires a replacement IRD unit. This is very rare though as it usually results in the the IRD being smashed up as the teeth are sheared off.

This fault is nothing to to do with your VCU, if you remove it you will find the car will not even move forward. But the problem you will have if you fix the gearbox/ird, if the vcu wasn't buggered before, driving it around with only rear wheel drive WILL have ruined as it will have been over heated.
 
if its rear wheel drive only, this is nothing to do with the vcu, a vcu test will prove naff all. if you want to prove its not got front wheel drive, jack one front wheel and spin the wheel by hand while its in gear, that will prove no drive. Or if you fancy a bit more excitement jack both rear wheels up and try nd drive away, if it has got front wheel drive it will get interesting ;)

wot i meant is that it would prove it wasnt a vcu problem, without taking it off, Austen.

But as yu said, one front wheel would be betterer.
