I am planning a trip down to Morocco from the UK this year in October. I have a basic idea of the route we want to take, heading down through Meknes to Merzouga and then on down to Tagiunite through the desert. Then turning North to head though the Troda and Dedes gorges finishing in Ouarzazate, from there we will head to Marrakesh and then follow the Atlantic Coast road back to the port.

I have the Michelin Map of Morrocco and have Motionx and Heremaps as digital opensource maps of the area. Researching the topic everyone seems to rely on the olaf maps which as far as I am aware are only available for garmin and most of the posts online relating to these are now about 5 years old. Are there any other sources to digitally identify pistes through Morocco, preferably one that is not going to cost much (buying a garmin) and is compatible with either iphone/ipad, and possibly now one that is more up to date than olaf.

Or

Is it possible to download and run the olaf maps without having to purchase a garmin product , and use these for route planning and identifying the pistes and routes around the country.

we did it three years ago. Chris one of our group did a blog of our adventure. You might get one or two tips from the above blog. I wasn't much good on the navigation side, I left it to the others. I was too busy enjoying myself.

We used OSM -which is free - in Morocco when Michelin was blank which was most of the time.. Worked a treat on an Android tablet and much easier to use (no real set-up required) but we did use Olaf and Wikiloc to plan our route. While there we made a few notes from some books a friendly Belgian showed us and also had a quick look at a map from the Marco Polo company which seemed, from a quick look, to be better than Michelin or the other popular one (not at home at the mo so can't confirm the publisher).
We tried to get from Fes to Smara without using tarmac, or at lease the minimum amount...good fun and 'coz we were solo we could take our time and really get the most out of it.
