Yeah pretty sure they rot just as bad as discos on the body.
OP you need to write down a tick list instead of thoughts and ideas banging around your head. My head does the same!
Start at the beginning and get the facts so you know what your dealing with. Have you got compression, is engine junk, is body junk, etc etc.

Well, its getting on for 2 years since it last drove, and its a year since its MoT ran out.
It didnt have any advisories for rust, so if it does need any welding, itll only be minor, but then I cant weld, so thats more money Id have to pour down it.
Compression is actually not that relevant, the electronics are so far gone that they may as well be trying to run a food blender. Obviously if I decided I wanted to tackle swapping all the electronics, Id do a compression test first. But I dont, I simply dont want to spend howerer long it would take me (ME, not a profesional, using only basic hand tools, groveling outside) to swap all those bits, and then put it back together again and have it running.
Then even if I did get it running, Id need to get it through an MoT, and I know itll need tyres, and since its sat for so long, itll probably need brakes too, and fresh fluids in everything. Then Id have to tax it and insure it, and spend the 50p/mile or so in petrol, and before you know it Ive just burnt another £2000 and however many weeks of free time, and I bet it would break in some other way shortly thereafter.

Thanks - but thats the problem, Im not too sure what I want. I know what I like doing, I like spending time with my mates, I like offroading and driving quickly, I like sparring, and all the other things the lower cortex desires. But none of those things are things I can do for a living, theyre just ways I can spend money once Ive earnt it.
So then Im left looking for the path that uses up the least of my time, in order to have the most time available for those things. Everyone I know has told me to do a degree, well Ive already wasted 2 years trying to do that, and now Ive used up another, and Ive got 3 more years to go. What am I going to do with my degree once Ive got it? No idea, but everyone tells me itll be useful.
I'll draw the comparison to a 4x4 trip, even if you cant change your own wheel, you should still bring a spare. Thats the attitude Im adopting with my degree, because truth be told, I dont know what Ill use it for, but everyone says I should have it.

I was watching a video on the tube and a guy had a D1 petrol.
He had driven through a rain storm and it suddenly died.
After checking many items in the engine bay, he was having a look around the cabin and found a wire for what he thought, was the brake light switch.
It had come loose, after fitting it back on, the car fired up instantly.
Not sure if this could help you 😕

How do you get by financially now? When I was 21 my work and play kept me busy enough. I raced bicycles and worked as a bike mechanic to support my self.

I ditched uni after a year and never looked back. It wasn't for me.

After having a family at 24 I went into the trades as a decorative painter. I worked for the rich and famous in Aspen Colorado for 35 years, so I never needed a degree.

You don't either. You just need to get on with your life.
 
Sounds like it’s getting you down and if that’s so just get it out your life and cut your losses. I’ve got two d1s one is full resto and ones an old commercial. Sometimes, which is quite rarely I find the project overwhelming but most of the time I can’t wait to get tinkering. I love it, love rebuilding stuff and love learning new little bits as I go. Get it out your life if it’s no enjoyment to you!
Off roading will cost you and a lot of the above will go hand in hand with it. It will cost you time and cash in parts and fixing it when you bust bits.
I would’ve had both off you for that money but now don’t have room 🤦‍♂️

So left home & moved 200+miles away by myself at 16. Parents were great.
Done a job with no experiance & made money to live & enjoy things.
18 moved back towards home & change of jobs. Worked crazy hours & had a very good life style. Could not spend the money as always working.
25 moved away again & back to first job as another contract had appeared.
28 moved again and now enjoying life,
To race cars you need money.plenty of it(I built 3 racers) the more you race the higher the costs.
Off road is a form of therapy. I built my own motor which Iv had for 28years. Plenty of time & tears went into it.

Never had a degree and some of the work I done you cannot get 1 for it.
Now after 20years in the same job I was made redundant. So 5years ago I Went out passed my HGV & now away all week. You need an understanding family.

Get your self sorted & be happy

Im not too keen on over-sharing on a public forum, but Ive finally managed to get a part time, dead end job, after months of searching. Im living with my parents, so my living expenses are minimal, but any chance of moving out is a pipe-dream for when my mates finnish uni, because house sharing may be a possibility.

The world is a very different place these days. You cant even be a labourer on a building site without a health and safety card, you cant paint peoples fences, etc etc. Even if you want to be self employed, you need public liability insurance, and so on. Im not saying its impossible, becasue theres probably a way around these things, its certainly nothing a little bit of nepotism still couldnt fix.

Im not one to shy away from hard work, infact over one summer job, I was working in a very competetive industry, and I given a nickname because everyone thought I was mad for working so hard - and guess what, eventually they werent getting many more shifts, and I was. But from what you described, that sounds like wasted time, unless you value the financial gain more than 7 years of your prime young adult life? I cant really comment, I spent the last 4 years getting an education that isnt worth the paper its printed on, I quite literally may as well whipe my arse with it.

Get your arse over here, I've got plenty of digging in my garden for a good.
And I'll pay you a whole £10 an hour, I know that's a crazy amount but I like to help others.
Did you try your brake switch yet.
 
Drink some alcohol, get a girlfriend (or two), drink some more alcohol, get another girlfriend and drink some more. That's what I did.
Met a lovely girl, got a reasonable job, split up with girlfriend. Met my future wife, got a better job and then got a Land Rover, God knows why, in my 50s.
Pointless wasting time on an education which leads nowhere and wasting money on stuff you can't afford.
 
I tried not to respond to this but keep coming back. I did similar to Phil - left 17 and went and worked on site away in digs. Fortunate enough to have had old school foreman and management. Spent all my 20s then living out a bag. Lost mates during Afghan times which made me push hard to live for them.
I’ve done everything you list as obstacles. A cscs card is a piece of **** to get which would allow you on site - you just get an induction from your company when you arrive.
 
So if @LetsHopeItFits does not like learning you won’t like site work. Every site you go to your inducted. Yep 30mins of your day but lasts a year or 2.
Yep you may think I wasted my early years working.. nope it meant I could enjoy life later.
List what you want to do…
(Do not think about how much you can earn you can’t put a price on life)

education is what you learn through working. No one says it was easy.
Yep work may be hard to find in your location but I never found it hard(get a tow motor & move stuff) get a tractor licence & work your way up.

Not true - we have taken on LGV1 drivers under 25, as well as those who have just passed their test.
Larger companies have very open policies (so long as no drink-drive etc.) - so gaining a job becomes more about the attitude of the person, than their age or experience. You’ll find they can buddy-up people with experienced drivers for a few weeks.

Our company trains new drivers. Spend time with an instructor doing jobs. Once you pass they keep an eye on you & release you to the big world. Depots all round the country but training is in Penrith.
After you get experiance you can swap roles.
Flat bed(convert to round timber trucks)
Curtain spiders
Walking floors
Timber trucks(with own grabs)
Artic tippers

And I never had any experience to drive HGV and was taken on straight away & not had any problems
