Hi new to all this so would appreciate some feedback!

Seen a Discovery V8 "Y" reg, 55k miles £3.7k, looks v.nice. Intend using for commute over icy hills (round trip ~16 miles a day) is it worth considering LPG conversion or should i buy one already converted?
Also - what tax do I pay on LPG conversion - its post Mar 01?

if your only doing small milage it might not be worth paying for the disco and then having it converted to gas, it would take years and years to get the value back from the fuel saving
 
A top notch multipoint LPG system by Prinz or similar will be around £2500 fitted. I haven't bothered converting my current V8 to LPG as my annual mileage/ vulnerability of damage to tanks when off road doesn't warrant it. Hope your nearest LPG filling point is not too far away either as travelling especially to fill up will erode any savings you hope to make.
 
You can get an LPG conversion at less than £2500, and the saving on fuel is well worth having, you'll average the equivalent of about 26-30mpg on LPG. Planning trips to include LPG stations is no hassle, and more are being added. We did 1500 miles to John O'Groats and back in September, and had no big problems, even in the Highlands. You DO need a gas outlet map/book though. Once north of Inverness, Dornoch is the last gas point northbound.

Whether it's worth it is entirely your choice/decision. Ours was bought with a Zavoli multipoint system fitted, we targetted an LPG-fitted V8 as we weren't that keen on another diesel after years of diesel vans etc. Ours is a 5-speed manual, most are autos. we tow a lot so wanted/preferred a manual box.

Gas is 56p a litre locally, we get 14-15mpg on gas on our Disco 2 V8, you can work out the figures.

In some respects the V8 petrol engine is less hassle than the TD5, but the older Disco 1 300Tdi was reckoned to be better than both.

A good V8 is a lovely car to drive, but a thrashed V8 with gasket or liner trouble is a money pit. A TD5 with a broken dual-mass flywheel or a cracked head is also a money pit. Mechanically they are the same apart from the engines.

Servicing is no different to petrol or diesel-fueled vehicles.

If you are only doing 6k a year, get one that's been converted. Make sure it's a good one with certificate etc. Take it for a long test drive from cold and get it up to normal. I would take it on a 10 mile trip minimum. You can get a converted one for the same price as a normal v8. Loads of nice lpg rangies about aswell!!!!!
 
Thanks all for responses, having been stuck for two days in the house with snow managed to get out and get some grit only to get stuck on incline on way home, was then passed by two landy's - must get this sorted!
 
Now is the time to buy a V8 landy or range rover, they are going for silly money. As stated before, get one that has already had a quality conversion (ask for the certificate, bill etc). The V8 discos are well specced, so make sure everything is working properly and go for a full history The 4 litre is a good reliable engine when looked after. If you decide to look at range rovers, a lot have the 4.6 V8, these can suffer with cylinder bore probs. I would go for the 4.0 se.
What ever you decide, buy from an enthusiast, check the history and certificates, give it a very long test drive and you can't go wrong.
