But he did say "wt for wt". we should be talking about it varying with density.In simple terms, the calorific value of carbon based fuels is directly proportional to its weight. Hence heavier wood will have a higher calorific value than lighter wood. Same applies to petrol and diesel, diesel is the heavier of the two (for the same volumes) and so has a higher calorific value - result is you get a higher mileage from a Diesel engine fuel consumption based on volume (ie per gallon).

There are some very dense woods, among the common woods oak is the densest.
So 1 kg of oak should give off as much heat as 1 kg of balsa. But it would have considerably less volume.
Diesel has a higher calorific value than petrol as you say, but you do say at the end "based on volume" although you managed to write the whole post without actually using the word "dense".
Your comparison of diesel and petrol does not take into account the fact that diesels are more efficient as they burn at a much higher compression ratio as well as the carbon per litre figure.
At the end of the day it is down to how many Carbon atoms there are per kilo and how easier they find it to burn in whatever circs they find themselves.

Could it have been that as it was being dragged up the slipway, the ice was melting then reforming under the pontoon where it was in contact with the slipway? And when reformed acting to ice both together? This might create strong resistance as the ice might be having to be broken again and again. Think about a sled dog having to break a sledge out before taking off over ice or snow
Is it salt water or freshwater?
Any access to a hose for hot water or any other way of heating the area? Or even saltwater?
Can't believe that it is cold enough for this to make steel that brittle.

If it is salt water then ice won't be the issue, probably!I think its just too heavy & the welded rings are too weak, plus we did notice that this one has come up the slipway on the
opposite side..one side has wooden green heart fenders running the whole length the other had rubber fenders running up
& down roughly every 2 meters so they are biting into the concrete. it slid up on the timbers the last time. I did heat the last 2 rings up with the gas axe but it made no difference. Its salt water btw.

So, when I started this job we had two Pug lutons for deliveries. An eleven plate an a twenty one plate. I noted in June that the oldy was drinkin oil, nobody did anything. In July it went pop, a few shifty meks have been around, all went away, still not sorted, it has been dubbed the "shed" (on wheels). Boss looking for a unicorn cheap fix.
Coming back from Ware today the other flashed up "stop safely, check the engine". We pulled over on the hard shoulder an popped the bonnet. I had a look.. "Yup, engine still there", the message went away but came back shortly after. We limped back the last five miles using the restart technique otherwise it wouldn't rev over 1.5k, kept the revs low all the same. Back in the quiet of the yard there is something very rattly going on in the top end, I suspect it too is burgered.
I'm prone to shadenfreude (or epicaricacy for anglo-purists), but only when the subject has it coming..

Maybe you need some flip off big logs to roll it up on. I've seen fishermen on the med coast using lickle logs to help roll their lickle fishing boats up the beach.

Plumber cannot "operate before the 27th.
And that is the one day in the next couple of weeks when we will be out all day and the do cannot be moved, so it'll be further on than that before it can happen.
Think I will have to have another go myself. See if the present pump is salvageable in anyway. I cannot make things worse than they are.

ago they said he wouldnt make Christmas & they were right. I didnt see him in the end I got my Aunt to give him my love last night & I hope he wasnt in pain. My dad said its the worst living person he's seen just a skeleton with skin. For the last week they have been giving him morphine no water, why dont they just give people a jag. If that was an animal we would do the decent thing & put it out its misery. Bloody shame to suffer for months like that.
